Spearing

Why doesn't this ever get called in football? With more and more people getting injured and injuring other people because they throw their head at someone, you'd think they would crack down on it. The last time I've seen it called was when I was in Midget football in 5th grade.

15 Yards

1. Chop block.
2. Clipping below the waist.
3. Fair catch interference.
4. Illegal crackback block by offense.
5. Piling on.
6. Roughing the kicker.
7. Roughing the passer.
8. Twisting, turning, or pulling an opponent by the facemask.
9. Unnecessary roughness.
10. Unsportsmanlike conduct.
11. Delay of game at start of either half.
12. Illegal low block.
13. A tackler using his helmet to butt, spear, or ram an opponent.
14. Any player who uses the top of his helmet unnecessarily.
15. A punter, placekicker, or holder who simulates being roughed by a defensive player.
16. Leaping.
17. Leverage.
18. Any player who removes his helmet after a play while on the field.
19. Taunting.
The bolded penalties are ones I never see anymore. I think they are shy to give them out because 15 yards is a big deal. But I agree, it is written into the rulebooks, so it should be enforced.

Leaping = Stupidest penalty ever.

And Noah did a good job of violating #15 against Toledo :P

I hate the leaping penalty. If no one is going to block you up top, go for it. I understand the reasoning that if you're diving at a quarterback, you're probably going helmet-to-helmet, but it's still pretty fun to watch.

College football isn't calling leaping at all.

Piling on? that's funny. I guess they do call it if you do it really late. But that's just because it's unsportsman-like.
