Jeff Meyer back to Big South?

It looks like the stars may be aligning for Meyer's return to the Big South. Should Greg Marshall move on, or Buzz Peterson take a new coaching job, both likely to happen, Meyer would probably be a candidate at CCU or Winthrop, especially since he has coached a WU before. What a rivalry this would be.

I think we all have had this possibility in the back our minds the past few days. He is looking for work right now and he would make an interesting candidate at both schools.

I hope the CCU job opens up. That would be THREE great rivalry schools - Radford (Obviously) Winthrop (Marshall) and then Coastal (Meyer) I may even renew my flames club membership for that!!!

I would love to see Coach end up back in the Big South. That would be fun. I have not spoken to him in a few weeks but I know he would like to be a head coach again.

Rumor on Buzz is that he may take a job as an assistant with Tubby Smith.

I'm hearing right now that JM is actively seeking a BS job, although even if there was an opening there wouldn't be much interest...we'll see though

Correct me if I'm wrong but isnt the assistant head coach up at KY a local boy and hit a game winning shot for EC Glass back in the day...I think it was the last time EC Glass won anything in any sport! I'm a Glass hater!

SJ, I said that b/c the rivalry aspect of it...if it comes true then you'll see how different it truly is compared to any other game

Why do you hope it comes true?

I heard that Meyer may be going to IU to be an assistant for Kelvin Sampson. I hve not reached out to my source yet but I will talk with my source tomorrow to confirm. HMO both CCU and WU would consider hiring Meyer in a heart beat. Almost every coach I know or talk to has Meyer in high regard plus the fact that Coach K is going to help him find a job since he helped Quinn Synder by taking the job a couple of years ago. No matter what you think of Meyer, I think he would be a good hire for either Big South program that may or may not have an opening at the head coach. It would be an intense rivalry game if he took either job though.

I know for a fact that Winthrop would be VERY happy to have JM back there. He would be a nice change from who they have now. I did not know about the IU assist job, that would be great. JM has no reason to worry about employment between his connections and now being a charter member of the Duke Family, he will land on his feet for sure.

honestly I think CCU would be more interested in David Hobbs if he was to lose his job and Buzz was to replace him....they could just make a trade...but really these are all and ifs and buts and these are just things people are hearing....all the best for JM, I dont question his ability or connections although I am surprised he hasnt landed a Head job some where, I would think he could do better than the BS when it comes to an open Job though

There has been a trend of former head coaches taking top assistant jobs. Dr. Ron Bradley at Clemson (former Radford head coach), Melvin Watkins and Meyer at Missouri, and others. Vitale did an article about it 2 seasons ago and mentioned the guys I just mentioned and a few others. Those top assistant jobs pay a lot of money at the bigger schools.

After my Lasik surgery, I have returned!!

JM is a class act and any school would do well to have him. If I am not mistaken, every school he has been to has gone to the tournament. ( I think Mizzu went his first year, Winthrop, Butler and of course LU). The IU thing sounds like a great fit for him b/c of his Hoosier Roots. (To bad Bobby isnt there) As for head coaches taking top Ast Jobs that is a trend that has been occuring recently. It does make some sense. One of the reasons JM went to Mizzu was to have a "veteran" coach help Quinn run a program and bring some experience. Obviously in this case it did not work. SCAR is correct, there is good pay out there for top assistants, and quite frankly less pressure. Sure you still have to recruit but you have now taken a roll where you can make suggestions and not decisions. A lot less stress and a lot better on your family life. I do believe that all of his children have flown the coop so a top assistant job would be logical. Of course, by the same token it may be a great time for him to step back into the head coaching ranks and a low DI conf. like the Big South would be a perfect fit. So all that to say, who knows!!

is it me or has Jeff's teams found investigations a few times in the last 5 years? If he's so good why wouldn't he get the Mizz job or at least a contender. What did he do at LU for some of yall kiss his butt so much, 1 title? What a joke! He'll be a assistant from here on out.

You stole my line!

Hey, lets keep this to only updates on where JM will land, let's not turn this into what we have had happen before, I think everyone pretty much knows where everyone else stands

Well Guest, I don't think anyone is kissing his butt but Jeff was and is a good coach in my opinion having worked with him and played for him. He had his weaknesses but he understands the game well. I was just pointing out the fact that he is held in high regard by most division 1 coaches that know him and that bodes well for getting a job. Speaking of which, he locked up the IU job on Saturday and is already working in Bloomington according to a reliable source.

I did not know that Wintrhop and Butler were under investigation? At least any more then LU has been. 1 Title is pretty good, but even better is his overall winning percentage. It is not butt kissing, and I would be the resident expert on that, but respect. (Something you may have never experienced in the morning!)
I love the GUESTS!!! Don't give into the hate brother. Accept who you are and one day you too can be out and proud!!

Kelvin Sampson is a Big 12 coach and Coach just spent 2 season in the Big 12. Meyer is a native of the state of Indiana as well. I don't know if any of those things were factors but I am sure I will here the story at some point.

I spent alot of time looking last night and couldn't find any talk of coach Meyer being added to Sampson's staff... I was reading an article on www.indystar.com that Sampson as of Tuesday was looking to fill out the rest of his staff but he didn't mention anybody that he had hired yet in the article...

Schools don't generally put out press releases on assistants until the complete staff is done unless there is somebody marquee involved. While Jeff is a household name on this board, he doesn't have much name recognition in Indiana outside the Butler campus.

As far as the guest saying NCAA investigations follow Meyer, do your reserach, Meyer was hired at Mizzou after the investigations had happen (firing of Lane Odom & Tony Harvey), because he is a man of high character. Also his other 2 stops, Butler and Winthrop, has had no investigations and he won big at both places 3 Big South Championships, NCAA Sweet 16, and some NIT appearances! Also his last year as Liberty Head Coach he went 23-9, only 2 maybe 3 Winthrop teams have had better records since then. Have a good day.
