Sean Glennon, stand-up guy he is, came to talk with us reporter types againSounds like a good kid. My heart breaks for him.
today -- even on what had to be the toughest day of his career.
There's not much for me to say here. He says it all. I will say, though,
that it's rough to see a guy look like he did today. He's hurting badly. And
who could blame him.
If the Tyrod Taylor Expiriment because the Tyrod Taylor Show, I don't expect
Glennon to be a Hokie this time next year. Read this for more on that.
I'll punch in QB coach Mike O'Cain's reaction later tonight. It was clearly
a tough decision for he and the coaches. I thought O'Cain was going to cry
when I asked how hard it was to tell Glennon the news.
He's always been a Glennon fan, always applauded his smarts and his work
ethic and been impressed with how badly the kid wants to succeed.
I know everyone is excited about Taylor's career beginning -- and rightly
so. He's a dazzling talent. But seeing the other side of that coin today is
a real downer.
Enough from me. Here's Glennon.
*** QB SEAN GLENNON
ON HIS DEMOTION, IN LESS THAN TWO GAMES: "Five quarters seems too quick to
just give up on someone, after a year starting. I get the MVP in the spring,
do well in scrimmages and camp. I felt like it was very rushed. Maybe they
had a plan to play Tyrod the whole time, because it just didn't feel like
the season played out long enough for them to say, 'Alright, Sean's not our
guy.' "
ON HOW PRACTICING WITH THE SECOND STRING TODAY FELT: "It's a blow to your
pride. I've only take 1 snaps for two years. It hurts. It's definitely . you
don't want to show it out here, and I'm still going to come out here and
play every day, but it hurts."
ON HOW HARD IT IS TO STAND ON THE SIDELINE: "It's hard, because I know some
people don't agree, but I think I can be a very good quarterback. I feel I'm
too good to be standing on the sideline."
ON WHERE HE GOES FROM HERE: "I graduate in December. I hope the coaches
realize that I need to be on the field this year. But if they don't, and at
the beginning of next season I know . I think a lot of programs would be
willing to take me."
ON WHAT HE'S DISAPPOINTED IN: "Everything. I put so much into the season,
and to have it just kind of taken from you in almost a blink of an eye .
Three days ago, I didn't even have a thought in the back of my mind that
Tyrod would come in and start. Disappointed in how quickly it played out.
Disappointed in . I remember O'Cain saying, 'Sean's our guy, period.' And
that always kind of gave me a sense of security. This morning was definitely
a shock."
ON TOUGHTS ON TRANSFERRING: "I don't know if I want to drop down to I-AA. I
don't want to think about transferring right now. It's not a good thought.
I've had a good time in four years here. I don't want to leave here. But I
feel like I'm good enough to play on any team in this country. Not to say
I'll make it, but I feel like I have a shot at the next level. And
obviously, I'm not going to not do everything I can to get there. I'd love
to stay here, but if they only plan on letting me call signals, obviously
I'm going to have to re-evaluate things."
ON WHETHER 'SEAN, PERIOD' WAS LIPSERVICE: "I hope not. That's one of the
things I was most upset about. I just really felt like this year, with me
being so much improved, that they were going to really stick with me,
through thick and thin. Hopefully there wouldn't be too much thin. But I
never thought I'd get the reins taken from me this early on."
ON LOOKING AT ANOTHER DROP-BACK PASSER, LIKE MATT RYAN AT BC, WHO IS ONLY
ASKED TO STAND IN THE POCKET, WITH GOOD PROTECTION FROM HIS LINE, AND THROW
DOWN FIELD . AND WONDERING WHAT-IF: "Yeah, I do. Obviously he's pretty good.
He's one of my picks for one of the better quarterbacks in the country. A
lot of people disagree, I know, but I think I'm pretty good. And I really
think under ideal circumstances, my arm can match up with any defense in the
country. I don't want to blame anything on anybody. That's the last thing I
want to do is say I'm not playing because of the line."
ON BEAMER, THOUGH, CITING THAT WITH CURRENT PERSONNEL, DEFENSES ARE GOING TO
FORCE THE QB TO RUN AND THAT'S NOT HIS STRENGTH: "I'm not in a great spot
right now. I won't say that I'm completely against the coaches' decision. I
still obviously don't agree with it. But I understand what they're getting
at. It's just unfortunate that I'm put in a position where, because my legs
don't move as fast as Tyrod's, I'm not going to be playing."
ON WHAT HE DID AFTER THE MEETING WITH BEAMER TODAY: "Well, I had to go watch
film. Then I had to lift weights. Then after that, I called my parents.
That's about it."
ON WHETHER TODAY WAS A FOG, JUST GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS AFTER THIS NEWS:
"Definitely, I don't have the enthusiasm or excitement. I think I still went
out here and played well. I just . it hurts. It breaks your heart to put
this much into something and have it taken away from you."
