Coastal receiver Simpson charged with simple assault

Coastal Carolina wide receiver Jerome Simpson was charged Thursday with simple assault and battery.

The senior All-American appeared in Conway magistrate court on Thursday morning, court officials said. Judge Bradley Mayers set Simpson's bond at $1,000 and ordered him to avoid contact with the victim. Mayers granted a personal recognizance bond, meaning Simpson did not have to post any money.

The warrant was filed Thursday morning, according to Horry County's public index.

Simpson will play in Coastal Carolina's opener at Delaware State on Saturday, athletic department spokesman John Martin said.

Simpson "did intentionally commit battery upon the victim by hitting her in the head, slapping with an open hand and again with a closed fist,'' according to his arrest warrant. Horry County police responded to Simpson's home at 1036 Stoney Falls Boulevard about 9 p.m. last Friday, according to an incident report.

They're now calling it a "misunderstanding" and that the girlfriend is dropping the charges.


Misunderstanding. I guess that's like saying I might be "chubby."

So he's Jason Kidd and not OJ Simpson. He must be so proud.

I've never believed the "Jerome Simpson is dirty" accusations stemming back from the 05 game. I semi-believed it after the game last year and the whole EL Estes debacle. This pretty must confirms that the accusations are more than likely true.

How do you "slap with a closed fist". In my country, that's called a punch. Anyway, here's my opinion that I posted on the coastal board.

Assuming everything reported is true, and he is indeed innocent, his girlfriend really needs to be made an example of. When has it ever been ok to "scare" someone by making false accusations in the court of law, wasting taxpayers time and money? If he hit her, he needs to be in jail (and punched in the face). If he didn't, she needs a good sized fine slapped on her. No pun intended.

I'm tired of the Jerome Simpson stuff. That's why. I grew up around him and heard rumors on the message boards but never played him so I didn't know. I got to Coastal and saw the way he acted. I've seen him as an opposing fan. I'm tired of big-time athletes getting away with everything.

Look, there was a reason other than "he's not fast enough" that the ACC schools didn't want him. ECU didn't mind that type of stuff, that's why he was headed there.

If it comes off as a hater, ok, fine. I've been hearing crap about Jerome Simpson for 5-6 years. He has yet to ever be disciplined publicly. Every time it ends up being a misunderstanding or something like that.

I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt just because I'm waiting to see what happens. Other than what Coastal says is gonna happen. But the coastal fans are just being stupid. Taking a wait and see attitude is one thing, but those guys are just swallowing his "explanation" hook, line, and sinker and then just looking the other way. Not even upset that this chick is out there throwing around accusations. It's really homerism at it's finest.
