I don't know how this slipped through the cracks the past couple of days. But you have to admit its ridiculously funny that Southern Virginia would be paying players at the NAIA level ... let that sink in.
Southern Virginia given probation for paying 2 players

Associated Press - August 17, 2007 4:25 PM ET

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics placed Southern Virginia's entire athletic program on probation for the 2007-08 school year. The football team was ordered to forfeit five wins for paying two players.

Southern Virginia officials said former football coach Gary Buer paid the players $8,000 over the past two years. The money came from a donor who knew it would be going to the players. The athletic department has dissociated itself from the donor.

Paying players and still STINKING in NAIA. Perhaps CiderJim should start an investigation of their Quiz Bowl team, too, with the ringers they had last year.

southern virginia has one of the worst athletic department in the state and country. their teams actually had a lower winning percentage than one of the local women's colleges last year, either RMWC or sweet briar can't remember which one. that is worse than pathetic.

actually, I wouldn't be surprised if cheating was even more prevalent at the NAIA level. When you think about it, those schools have to use more bargaining chips to land athletes than the larger schools.

Didn't we play S.Virginia??
Seriously, you REALLY have to do something to get hit with probation at the NAIA level!! Where as the NCAA hasa rule book, the NAIA has more of a rule pamphlet. Plus, the NAIA is really trying to keep as many of its members as it can. Wow.

LC also has played SVa and will be playing them again in men's basketball. If LC can beat them, then you know they suck really freaking bad.

SVU won the regional Quiz Bowl tournament last year at UT-Knoxville and went on to compete in the the Nationals in Quiz Bowl. No word on if any of their players in the "varsity sport of the mind" received any financial compensation for their efforts, though most of their team was in their 30s and 40s with wives and a Mormon-load of kids.
