OK this is hard for me to some degree because I hate the Yankees. However, the Yankees of the 40's and 50's were as big as it gets. Phil Rizzuto was a HUGE part of that. As a 8-12 year old I read and studied baseball and stats like crazy. So it has been a complete shock to me that everyone seems to want to talk about Phil Rizzuto as a great broadcaster and an OK Short Stop. For his era he was an incredible short stop. Don't look at him relative to the ss position today, look at those he played against. Check out his stats and you will see that he was an excellent ss and batter. He led the league many times in many categories, and was the A.L. MVP in 1950 (2nd in voting for MVP in 1949). He was a very good baseball player in a team of giants. He should have been a Hall of famer way before the vet committee put him in. Some writers are idiots. It just makes me mad to hear everyone talk about what a fun guy "Scooter" was, and then just mention the baseball as an aside. Check out his stats here.

Most of America will remember the Money Store spots. Frankly they never made much sense to the rest of the nation who didn't remember his playing career because we weren't in on the "Holy Cow" schtick form the Yankees broadcasts.

Phil was also doing the radio call on Meatloafs 1977-8 song "Paradise By the Dashboard Light"

To the day he died, scooter insisted he didn't have a clue about any "double entendres" when he recorded the voiceover for the Meat Loaf trak.

Met him at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore in 1989 or 1990. He signed a baseball for me.

How about the Phil Rizzuto talking bobble head doll in Seinfeld. George loses it, falls into a pothole, then the city fills the pothole, so every time a car drives over the pothole you hear "Holy Cow!"
