Gardner-Webb opens the season Sept. 1 with a guarantee game at Ohio University. Two games later, the Bulldogs have to play another Football Bowl Subdivision team in Mississippi State.

Throw in a game at two-time defending national champion Appalachian State followed by one at Wofford just before the Big South season begins, and coach Steve Patton has enough reason to worry about his team's health.

"We could be a decent team and not know it," Patton said. "It's not just injuries, it's getting beat up. You do that week after week after week, I don't care how good you are. Yeah, I'm concerned about it, but there's nothing you can do about it."
