It wasn't that long ago he was being mentioned in regard to our opening. I like how things worked out all things considered.

It could have been worse for them IMO. At least he has a name that alot of kids will recognize.

i think it is an ok move. personally i would have went with youth in florida assistant lewis preston, but cliff ellis has a track record of success at clemson, auburn, and south alabama. so they will have to do another search in 5 yrs as i can't believe he would coach longer than that but who knows he may have rejuvenated himself so much that may want to coach longer than that.

Super, why do you think it's a bad hire? Too old? Been out of coaching for too long? Or what?

Both of those, past NCAA violations, etc.

I'm of the mindset that schools of our conference, etc are better off taking a chance on a young guy being the next Gregg Marshall than someone old and washed up.

Exactly. I thought Preston would be the good hire, if not the current assistant. Looks like Ellis is going to early retirement at the beach. I just don't see him working hard enough to win. He has some other assorted baggage as well.

Why not take the chance on a assistant who was part of a national title?

What would they have to lose anyways? The arena is going nowhere right now. If they have a bad season or two, ok, get the guy out and move on, because a year or two now they may be closer to getting the arena.

Heard on the paul finebaum radio show yesterday (syndicated southeast sports talk show) Cliff Ellis, who has been run out of every town he ever coached in,landed on his feet at Coastal Carolina. Of course, if you land in Coastal Carolina, I think it would be more accurate to say that you landed on your teeth.
