A Sea Of Red

You all know how much I like to toot my own horn:P and I know many of you like to look at the new football stadiums and basketball arena's under construction at similar schools. It should be completed by November and you can take a look at a few of the pics at http://samfordsports.cstv.com
This was basically a requirement for us moving up to SoCon, as our former gym was grossly undersized and far outdated.
Speaking of basketball, when are the Charlotte Bobcats going to just rename themselves the tar Heels part 2?

Not shabby at all. Any idea what the seating capacity will be?

I believe it's supposed to hold all about 5,000 for basketball and about 6,000 for concerts. We only have about 4,000 undergrad and 1,500 grad school, and the law,divinity and pharmacy students aren't exactly regular attenders.
We're supposed to raise to enrollment to 5,000 undergrad by 09, but who knows. My best friend is the director of marketing, and his office will overlook the baseball field and the football field.
They really picked a great location to build it. You can see the view looking down on the other fields if you go to choose sport- men's basketball ,and browse through the construction updates under HEADLINES., they are photos number 15 and 18. The home,press tower side of the football stadium is just over to the right, but you can't see it in that particular photo.

is radford one of your top rivals? I don't know much about that college. Judging from the name, I'm assuming it's a private school. I think they played Duke as the 16 seed back in the days of brand and battier.

Radford has been our primary basketball rival for a decade or so. They are a relatively large state school (just under 10k enrollment) a little over an hour away from us near Virginia Tech. They have seen better days atheletically.

I'm surprised you haven't formed a bigger rival w/ a private school. Isn't high point up there on your hit list? One of their alums lives in our apartment complex and sparrow is always mocking that school.

That's the problem ... its a small school that doesn't have a history of success. You need great matchups to build a rivalry. We are building ones with other Big South teams like VMI and Winthrop & CCU to a lesser extent.

We don't operate like a traditional private school. The only true private near us that would make some sense to develop a rivalry with is Richmond. And the Spiders don't want to have anything to do with us.

We recruit & compete more on a national basis than a regional one like most privates in the Southeast. We operate similar to some SoCon privates but we have much larger ambitions (realistic or not).

Richmond is the only true private (Not really counting VMI or W&M who we have developed terrific relationships with in recent years) in relatively close proximity to us at the FCS level. But their administrations utter hatred for anything connected with Jerry Falwell has kept us from anything meaningful with the Spiders in football.

Most of us don't have an elitist attitude about being a private school, that's why we don't care if our rivals are privates or publics.

is this new arena set up for ice hockey as well? looks like it could handle it pretty easily. (conversion back and forth, I mean)

Funny you ask, because that was the first thing I wondered when I saw that pic. To tell you the truth, I'm really not sure about that, but I doubt it. We don't even have a club team, and the Birmingham Jefferson county civic center is convertabile, as well as Pelham Civic center, so any local teams would probably opt for one of those two venues. The reason it looks so wide is that it's going to have extra floor space for increased seating during graduation.

By the way, I found it kind of amusing that someone was bragging about not being an elitest........
