Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is part of a group considering formation of a football league that would compete with the NFL for players drafted lower than the second round.


The league, still very much in the preliminary stage, would play its games on Friday nights. The NFL does not play then because of the potential conflict with high school football.

Can NEVER get enough football.

They said it on PTI:

Start it in April. Play through the summer. Championship game on Labor Day. Welcome back NFL. Super Bowl. NFL draft. New league starts. Repeat.

Football, 365 days a year.

The divorce rate in America would go even higher.

i think thats a great idea. the key would be to make sure they could get it televised, but i'm sure that wouldn't be a problem. i would watch it. you can never have too much football

With Cuban at the helm, somebody MIGHT give it a chance. If the XFL gets a TV gig -- certainly, a legitmate football league gets a shot.

Nothing in the initial releases indicate this would be a spring/summer league like the USFL. Why would they play Friday nights unless it were the fall?

And yes, the USFL was a blast.

Exactly Sly, they are from all indications going to be competing with the NFL when they shouldn't be....this could be another xfl.....since Friday nights are the lowest TV viewership of the week.

You have to start somewhere. A new league isn't going to compete with the NFL right away. The NFL is on top of the sports world right now and a league would take some time to reach a level anywhere close to competing with the NFL.

I would imagine the rational is to stay away from college football on Saturday, which leaves Friday as the only option, as you don't want to have a broadcast through the week.

if planned right then it could work...the xfl was planned terribly...they had 2 weeks of training camp and the quality of football was terrible...I went to the first Orlando game in the xfl and football was terrible...but there were drunk girls flashing everybody

I loved the USFL, go Bandits, but this will new league will end up like the USFL,WFL, XFL,etc

Mark Cuban hasn't actually had a good idea in his entire life thus far. He's just had some very lucky breaks. Despite his wealth, I don't consider him to be a successful person and I would imagine that anything he's involved in will reach the same levels of success as him.

didn't mark cuban basically do what bill gates did....take a friend's idea and ran with it???

From what I've heard from the original report is a billionaire friend of Cuban's contacted him to see if he'd be interested. My assumption is that he knew Cuban would be a face that can get behind this and so he actually passed the torch on. I believe they are looking for 7 more billionaires. But this guy knew he couldnt be the face of this marketing ploy and there is no sports franchise owner out there more recognizable than Cuban (although George prob. would be more recognizable) although Cuban's the new George without the titles

Time for some clarification. This league is being started by Bill Hambrecht, and Cuban will be one of the first team owners, if this works. It will be run somewhat like MLS, where the league has ownership in all the teams.

Yeah, who would want to be the only American football team in a city of 20 million people infatuated with American sports culture?

Frankly I would be shocked if Mexico City, Guadalajara (flameshaw shout out) or Monterrey didn't start working hard to lure an existing NFL franchise south. Mexico has proven to be rabid NFL territory primarily as fans of Los Vaqueros. And I wouldn't rule out an MLB franchise south of the border at some point as well. Even David Stern has hinted recently about further North American expansion before they consider Europe or Japan.

I'm with you sly... Unfortunately most people think of Mexico as what happens across the border from Laredo... but there are opportunities in the big cities.

maybe I've seen Traffic and Man on Fire to many times but their law and judicial system makes me nervous and if you think the players are tempted with drugs to much now wait until they get down there
