For those of you that don't know, Feinstein is an alum of Duke.

One thing he fails to mention is the alleged steroid scandal under the previous baseball staff.

i am a die-hard duke fan, have been from the time i saw light, and will ALWAYS be.

however, i agreed with every word of that article. every word.

i dont know who feinstein is, but he's right about all that stuff.

He has written a few books, March to Madness (I think) was one of his best according to others. I have not had a chance to read it.

I agree with what he said as well. I'm glad the judicial system worked and the innocent were not charged. However, some of those guys still did disgusting and illegal things (ie, underage drinking). Let's not annoint them saints.

that's the reason i had no desire to go to school there. everyone from the president to the custodians felt they should be annointed saints.

I thought this paragraph stood out the most:

Yeah he did... apparently, former coach at UNCA = crony

hiring a crony as baseball coach who HAD to be fired because the team was awful and former players came forward to say he had encouraged them to use steroids, and looking foolish almost everyone time he opened his mouth in public (which he rarely did, usually hiding behind press releases).

I thought it was a well written, and I agree with all of his points

i'm a big K supporter. i go to the basketball games and football games. i keep up with the school and the athletic program. my dad raised me a dukie, and now i'm hardcore.

however, i won't deny the facts. like i said, that article pretty much said it all.

as far as graduating AND representing the school well... i dont know about that. obviously the football team is just not good right now, and the lacrosse team did represent the school poorly, but i don't think that speaks for the entire university. i mean... all bias aside... duke is a pretty good school. i would imagine many people graduate from there AND represent the school well.

By and large, getting admitted to one of the top 'name' schools in the first place is much harder than actually graduating from them.

Yeah, I've heard the same arguement about Carolina. Hard to get in, not so hard to graduate. However, I've had buddies graduate from State. They said it was easier to get in, but harder to graduate. I guess you pick your poison.

Feinstein is the man...We have him on the show all the time and this does not surprise me at all....When I was down at the ACC Tourney each night we talked for a few hours about various things and he mentioned alot of this stuff and how he was just frustrated at what was going on there...He is working on a new book right now about Mussina and Glavine.....His new book tales from Q school is a great read as well..

I am also a Duke fan and I can't stand John Feinstein but, that said, he's 100% right. Duke athletics has suffered for at least the last two decades and it's suffered from the top down. There is an institutional hubris there that says, "We're Duke University. So long as we have the basketball teams, we're fine." Well, it's not fine. The Duke admin effectively quit supporting athletics as soon as they gave Coach K the lifetime contract. Now, Goestenkoers(?) is gone. That's a big loss and there's no reason in the world that she would have fled the scene for Texas or anywhere else if the admin were actually supporting the program. The football team isn't just bad; it's horrendous. I saw their game vs. VMI from '05 and it was just painful to watch. VMI was bad (yeah, yeah, I know; we were worse) but Duke wasn't much better and that's more than just a coaching problem. You even kind of got the sense this past year that Coach K is getting tired of it. With his back issues and the admin drama, I'd be suprised if he doesn't retire within the next 4 years or so. It's enough to put a tear in that Blue Devil's eye.

i don't study the women's program like the men's, but i do keep up... and i just couldnt believe when i heard coach G was headin out. well, i could believe it, but i didnt see it coming, nor did i like it!

i agree with you about coach k. i wouldnt be surprised to see something happen with him within the next 5 or so years. k has to be getting burned out. i agree, i sensed he may be getting a little tired of it. my dad and i have had that conversation a few times within the last 2 year.

UNC-C, UNC-G, ECU, UNC-A - Easy, period
UNC-W - harder than Carolina to get into, not hard to get through
App - semi-hard to get into, not too tough to get through
Elon - just need money
G-W/Campbell/WCU - they'll take anyone because it's the middle of nowhere

You are DEAD WRONG about UNCA (no hyphen in the name, either). VERY selective and you have to work your butt off to stay. Trust me...teaching at UNCA and their calibre of students was unbelievable.

I've NEVER heard of anyone getting turned down by Asheville.


I've only heard of two people applying though.
