End comes swiftly for Tacoma boxer

JONATHAN HOWARD; For the News TribunePublished: May 5th, 2007 01:00 AM

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Presumably, Tacoma’s Jonte Willis was just 54 seconds away from a trip to the finals Golden Gloves National Tournament of Champions.
The 23-year-old super heavyweight was clearly the leader in his semifinal bout on Friday night against Tyler Turner of Minneapolis, Minn., until Turner knocked him out cold with a straight right to the jaw.
Liberty fans may remember Tyler as #96 at defensive end on the football team last fall. This win guarantees him a shot at the US Olympic team.

Lib - Where did Tyler train while he wa sin school. There isn't a gym anywhere around Lynchburg, is there?

Congrats to Tyler by the way. That's a huge accomplishment.

If I'm not mistaken, he told me he would go to Roanoke. He missed the Senior Football Banquet back a couple of weeks because that's where he was.

Impressive...hope he does well with his shot at the Olympics.

I still say that a darkened Vines with spotlight on a center ring would make for a decent venue for Golden Gloves/Olympic style boxing.

He lost but am still proud of him for making it all the way to the finals. I can't wait to see how he does this next coming year.
