Great article in the Roanoke paper about the mess that is the Radford program...
Last year, Radford University baseball coach Lew Kent undertook an independent analysis of spending patterns for baseball programs judged to be the Highlanders' peers.

Kent's study came at the behest of Chuck Hayes, who holds the title of special assistant for athletics to Radford president Penelope Kyle. The schools that Kent reported on included all state Division I baseball-playing schools that did not also play Division I-A college football.

Those included Radford's Big South Conference rivals VMI and Liberty as well as James Madison, George Mason, Old Dominion, and Virginia Commonwealth. He also looked at Division III Christopher Newport for a comparison of coaching salaries. The other two schools he looked at were Appalachian State and Western Carolina.

A head coach for D-1 baseball only makes $40k??? That's horrible. Especially with a guy who's been committed to your program for 15 years! I'm glad for him that he's leaving. He should be honored for how long he stayed through that mess.

The school he SHOULD have compared with would be UNCA. LESS $$ for schollys and salaries...and they compete well. My sources tell me that the coach was as much of a problem as anything.

Most people would probably get disillusioned after 15 years at a place making what compares to minimum wage for coaching D1 Baseball...
