Ex-Grambling coach Robinson dead at 88

RUSTON, La. -- Eddie Robinson, who sent more than 200 players to the NFL and won 408 games during a 56-year career, has died. He was 88.

Eddie Robinson retired in 1997 having seen Grambling State rise to national prominence.

Super Bowl MVP quarterback Doug Williams, one of Robinson's former players, said the former Grambling State University coach died shortly before midnight on Tuesday. Robinson had been admitted to Lincoln General Hospital on Tuesday afternoon.

I don't know for sure, but I did hear on the radio this morning that ER was at one time the coach with the most wins in D1. So Bobby, or some one else may have passed him in the last few years. Regardless, he did a great job at GU and Doug Williams spoke very highly of him today on ESPN radio.

Grambling was not classified as D1 until 1977. Eddie Robinson has more total wins but Bobby Bowden has more D1 wins.

it does not matter about how many wins. robinson was an icon for college football, and probably the greatest influence for the black football player back in the day. may he rest in peace.
