That's crazy, he's a great coach and I think he would have eventually earned his way in, but based on what he's done so far I just don't see it. Heck, you could even say Larry Brown and Matt Doh both handed him a championship team. He's worked at 2 places that recruit themself. And I really like Roy too. I just don't think he has HOF credentials yet.

The only thing he has is a national title, and being the fastest coach to reach 500 wins.....maybe

I was glad to see my man Van Chancellor get in. He'll be employed again very shortly.

For the record, the Naismith HOF has the lowest standards of any of the three major halls. Based on others already in, Roy deserves it.

Larry Brown didn't hand him a championship team. Larry won it in '88 & Danny Manning left after that. Roy never won it at KU. But he did make 4 Final Fours with those players, so it's not like he had never been there before. He lost by 3 pts. in '03 to Syracuse.

While Matt did recruit most of the UNC players, the key reserve for that team was Marvin Williams, a Roy Williams recruit. By the way, who do you think taught Matt how to recruit?

I hear so many people try to use that arguement against Roy. For that matter, Jimmy V never won a title on his own at NCSU, they were Sloan's recruits. Urban Meyer doesn't have a national title in football @ UF, they were Zook's recruits, etc...

It's part of an overall argument. I don't think he has HOF credentials. The silver spoon in his coaching mouth adds insult to injury.

I'd say winning 80% of your games & winning 500 games faster than any other coach has to get you in. He won his first national championship in less FF visits than Coach K, Dean, Calhoun, etc... He's only the 3rd coach to take two teams to the championship game. He's won at least one game iin the NCAA tourney for 18 straight years (that's an all-time record). He received the John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award in 2003 from the Los Angeles Athletic Club. Other recipients of the Wooden Coaching Award include Smith, Mike Krzyzewski, Olson, Denny Crum, Mike Montgomery, Jim Calhoun and Jim Boeheim.

Even as a Tar Heel fan, I'm not ready to label him the greatest coach ever, but his stats so far are very impressive. In fact, if Ellington's shot goes down at the end of regulation against G'town, he'd have another Final Four. There is not a program in the country that wouldn't like to have a coach like that. I'd say that speaks volumes about the HOF.

Here is a great quote from someone we all might recognize:

sorry, but a winning percentage does not get you in unless you are retired. That not only can but will change from year to year. 600-700 wins gets you consideration. That can only go up.

Where did you get this info from? Calhoun has only been to the FF twice. Won them both. And how can you use etc in a statement like that?

Yeah, I realized that right after I posted. I meant to change, but I'm at work & I had to take care of something. I was thinking of the things about Calhoun winning the award & his statement. I got my thoughts mixed up.

He has an .800 winning percentage over 19 seasons. It's not like he won 80% just a few years in his career. Of course it changes from year-to-year, but overall, it's 80%.
