There is an article on ESPN arguing that Kobe is better than Jordan.. not more sucessful but a better player. Interesting read.. debate away.

I need a puking emoticon
it's hard enough to get people to say he's the best player in the league (he's not)...now we're saying MJ, one of the greats of all time!

jordan in the early years was stuck in the same situation as kobe is now....bad team, he has to do everything....Jordan was a better shooter, a better penetrater, and a better defender than kobe...and i also think nobody's work ethic rivals jordans...
the idea that the nba is better now is laughable....maybe athletic and size wise but not fundamentally and competitively...
Kobe has a good chance to break many jordan records but then he also had 4 more years to do it....I think kobe will go down as a top 3 player of all time but jordan isn't the considered the greatest because of hype....

I think Kobe is a better shooter than MJ from behind 17 feet...MJ was never really a 3pt shooter, Kobe is...I think this debate will go on for a very long time..I am a big Kobe fan, I think that it will depend on how more rings Kobe gets and then how he gets them...MJ was and is the best still to this day,but Kobe is right behind him and I agree that he will beat some of his records when it is all said and done...

Well, it's pretty safe to say that MJ was not shooting 3 pointers until he got in the pros. Of course that wouldn't be one of his stronger skills.

Kobe (Philly 'burbs, baby!) is awesome - don't care for the guy but to not recognize that is stupid.
MJ made everyone better, best ever in the final moments of a game....
On second thought, he has a lot of "best evers"!
I agree with an earlier post, Kobe does not deserve to be compared to MJ at this time- wait a few years

I think that answer to that belongs on how you rank Scottie Pippen compared to Shaq. Scottie, in his prime, was possibly the top defender in all of basketball. Shaq, is considered in the top 4-5 big men of all time. I've heard the arguement before that to compare the two, you have to compare who had more help. Obviously, coaching is a wash -- but when you look at the title run, Kobe is considered Shaq's sidekick..

In terms of pure raw basketball talent, it is not even close to me. Kobe is better. In terms of being a winner and making people around him better, the nod goes to Jordan. Athleticism and size - Kobe. Jump shot from distance - Kobe. Finishing at the rim with authority - Wash. But Kobe dunks harder. History is gonna Judge Jordan the better player but quite simply put, Kobe can physically do things Jordan couldn't. Jordan will still be considered the best ever when Kobe retires though.

TD I am not using wins and losses as the criteria. I am judging basketball skills and talent and Kobe can do things Mike can't. People think Mike is the best at everything because he is the best all around player. Kobe is a better shooter, jumps higher, is more athletic, stronger, bigger and physically more gifted than Mike. Honestly Mike even says that Scottie is more gifted than he was in terms of athleticism and I tend to agree. However, Jordan has a heart like few in any sport. Tiger, Lance Armstrong and a few football players like Rice or Montana and Wayne Gretzky. That heart and will to win is why people take Mike but in terms of abilities, Kobe hands down.

SCAR is with Kobe because of the PA relationship....

IMHO, Jordan played in a tougher league than Kobe did, and with a lot more pressure on him. If nothing else, those factors give him the edge in my mind. No matter who comes along, until the league recovers from whatever funk it's in, it won't be the same, which won't let me compare players.

Unless, of course, you were guarding Jordan.

I think you guys are missing the spirit of my post. No way is Jordan more athletic than Kobe. Jordan was not the most athletic guy on the court when he played. Kobe is almost Always the best athlete on the floor by far. In fact most accept that as fact that have played in the league from Magic to Steve Kerr. In terms of basketball skills and athletic ability I think you have to give the nod to Kobe. I like Jordan better even though Bryant is a Philly guy. I got to know his dad pretty well when he was a coach at LaSalle (another 2 degrees of separation) but that is not clouding my judgement here. I think Mike is the greatest and has the greatest legacy but Kobe to me is a combination of skills and athleticism that we have never seen.
