Marshall met with USF athletic director Doug Woolard Tuesday night in Rock Hill, S.C. As of late Wednesday night, Marshall was deciding whether to come to Tampa or accept a $400,000 a year offer to stay at Winthrop, which would be nearly half of what USF would offer.

Woolard also interviewed South Alabama coach John Pelphrey in Atlanta Saturday and spoke with former Virginia coach Pete Gillen last week, but neither one received a job offer.

If he leaves...
...that would give us a chance to spend the next couple of weeks speculating who WU will hire? Would they pick someone from the current staff with Big South HC experience, or perhaps someone from his original staff with BS HC experience?

I will ask Jeff if he is thinking of leaving IU but I doubt he will leave right now even for WU. He has a chance to get a really big time job if IU continues to get better. Plus he gets to coach EJ next season. He could ride that wave to a job like Indiana St or some other division 1 in his region.

I didn't realize they were only 11 years older than we are... It makes me even more optimistic that we can go D-1 in football within 10 years.

Did anyone notice in that article that the former USF coach was paid the same as GM? Winthrop supposedly is offering 400k/yr. We'll see if USF outbids them... that'd be almost a 48% increase in salary for that position... that's a big jump... but then again it's a big jump they recently made to the Big East.

That means Marshall must chose between USF and Winthrop. Woolard had said previously he would make a significant investment and commitment for a new coach, meaning the Bulls likely would offer at least double the $310,000 salary that former coach Robert McCullum received.

That means $310,000 X 2 = $620,000

No... The article mentioned the fact that USF would be able to beat out Winthrop in a bidding war if it came to it. USF wants to win and it looks like they have their targets on him right now... He wont take a pay cut... he's going to cash out closer to $450k/yr

We beat USF in football several years ago (I think) at LU. They have made some great strides since then, but then again they have public money and are in Fla. I am wanting to say they had a player on that team that played in the NFL and was drafted the first day. He was a DB as I recall Sammy?

Back OT, hope Marshall goes anywhere and expect he will.

Asante Samuel to the Patriots. We beat them in '98 in their 2nd year of play and then got smoked in '99, '00, & '01.

I beleive the article says double what the last coach was paid at USF, not double what WU could offer.

USF football has a few key factors working in its favor. Besides the miami metro area, southwest florida is arguably one of the top five recruiting areas for talent. USF (U Stay Forever:) has a great head coach and the pleasure of playing in the ray jay (tampa bay bucs home stadium) and their sister school to the east, UCF U CAN'T FAIL , is also a relatively young school. UCF was founded in 1967. UCF will be playing in a brand new stadium, known as "brighthouse networks stadium" next year. They christen it with a home-opener vs. Texas.What better way to start off a new era than with a 30-point loss in front of a packed home crowd? I just hate the fact that the stadium, along with so many others these days, is named after a corportation. Considering how expensive my cable/internet package bill usually is, I should have an entire section of that stadium devoted to me.

They are going to lose that game, but not by 30 points....they had an off year last season, but they are building something good there at UCF...something for the long run....USF got blessed in is in the better conference, but they aren't putting near as much effort into things like UCF is....USF's attitude seems to be, "we've made it to the Big East, our work is over".....

Not to metion UCF just had there best recruiting class EVER....So yes, they will probably lose to Texas to open up the new stadium...but it will be a very respectable game on national tv...

I have seen USF go from a non sport school to football about 10 yrs ago and they have had basketball since the 1970, school opened up in the 1950. A couple of years ago, USF had three players picked in the draft, I cannot remember which rounds.
Now is this the coach who left WU and took a job and changed his mind and went back to WU?

this would be that same coach....USF has come a long ways that for sure..its amazing how far both USF and UCF have come in such a short amount of time....great rivalry is building between the 2 schools..but USF's football coach wants to stop playing UCF for some reason....it could be an amazing rivalry for years to come though....

Yep UCF and USF would be a great rivalry as they are only 70 miles apart. I think USF is afraid of losing to UCF, they think they have more to lose by losing to UCF. USF did a better job of moving from 1-AA to 1A then UCF did and in a shorter period of time.

Plus, USF has Jenn Sterger showing up at football games
