Ok....I dont read any other message boards so I was hoping some of you could update me on what Marshall might do...is he gonna leave, stay? What options does he have?

I hope he stays...honestly, me yelling at him while he's walking to the locker room, then he stops, turns around and stares at me with that devilish look will fuel me to next year....I need this man! Please stay!

speculation that he's either interested in or has been contacted by:

Michigan
Minnesota
New Mexico

nothing concrete at this time

I can understand the last two...but you really think he's got a chance at the Michigan job?

He strikes me as the type that would wait for something more local.

thats the other prevailing train of thought- he'll hold out for an SEC or ACC gig when one opens.

New Mexico job = leverage. I think he takes that job as a fallback if nobody bigger comes calling. The number 750k-850k has been thrown around with that job. It's good for him to have that out there. I didn't realize he'd be offered that much so forget what I said about local.

I was thinking Tom Moore might go to USF but I'm starting to think that's not as likely. USF seems like it'd be a good fit for Marshall. Good conference, great place to play, great recruiting area. It'd be an uphill battle since they stink right now but what team looking for a new coach doesn't?

Interesting little side story: I was watching a copy of the TV broadcast of our football game at USF in 2001. At halftime, they ran an interview segment with the USF men's basketball coach at the time, Seth Greenberg.

FWIW- Vitale mentioned Marshall's name in connection with the Michigan job. Of course after lamenting the fact that Amaker never should have been fired. There were also a few other folk throwing that name in there thruout the day.

When Mich. comes calling, it's going to be real hard to pass that up. With the resources they have and some of the recruiting beds thats been planted -- hard to see anyone passing that up.

I would get back into coaching for the Maze and Blue! Marshall will have to consider that and take it if offered IMO.

From the Winthrop board..

UNM Coaching Search: Lobos Take Next Step with Winthrop's Marshall

Athletics Director Paul Krebs gets permission from Winthrop's AD to speak with coach Gregg Marshall.

By Jeremy Fowler (Contact)
Monday, March 19, 2007

It's no longer speculation that the University of New Mexico is after Winthrop coach Gregg Marshall.

UNM has received permission from Winthrop's Athletics Director Tom Hickman to speak with his winning men's basketball coach about the Lobos' coaching vacancy, Hickman said Monday night.

Marshall, who has led the Eagles to seven NCAA Tournaments in his nine seasons, declined comment on whether a UNM administrator met with him during his team's tournament run this past weekend in Spokane, Wash.

"I don't talk about jobs at all," Marshall said.

Marshall doesn't have to talk to understand what UNM has to offer. Marshall is aware that the Lobos are prepared to start him off at $750,000 per year or higher, a source close to Winthrop said. Marshall currently makes about $224,000 per season, a number Winthrop might try to boost to retain its hot coach.

If the interest is mutual, Marshall could fill the vacancy left by Ritchie McKay, who was fired Feb. 22.

Athletics Director Paul Krebs has declined comment on every coaching name throughout a search that's finishing up its fourth week.

Krebs is also interested in Southern Illinois' Chris Lowery, Iowa's Steve Alford and UCLA assistant Kerry Keating, sources say.

A five-time Big South coach of the year, Marshall has compiled an impressive 194-83 record with the Eagles, who defeated Notre Dame in the first round of this year's tournament. Winthrop lost to Oregon in Sunday's round of 32 matchup.

Marshall accepted the College of Charleston job last year but rejoined Winthrop days later.

From what I've heard, Marshall isn't interested in the Lobos. And Michigan isn't calling. Apparently WU is putting together a package that is pretty nice. Still don't know what will happen but him leaving isn't a foregone conclusion anymore.

From a source close to the situation: Gregg is not interested in moving his family all the way to New Mexico.

That comes straight from the horse's mouth to my source. Also, a financial package is being put together that may keep him here for several more years.

I was told we're not out of the woods (the South Florida job is one that we should watch out for) but GM is not serious about NMU right now...

For what its worth...
not sure if this is true or not..but I have heard from a couple of different sources...that a new package in the realm of 600k is being put together for Marshall..again..may not be true..but I have heard that from two different people now..
believe you are right.. I just heard almost the exact same thing from my buddy who is "close" to Marshall's staff....though i did not hear 600k..but something very close.. And you wont believe who is ponying up for this.. More to come once I can try and verify this. Again, just what I am hearing.

Another thing I heard.. Ticket sales were up 41% this season, if that is true, that would be the 2nd most in the country....

Does WU have that kind of money??

I bet there would be just a FEW professors over there a WEE bit unhappy over spending more than 1/2 a mil to keep a hoops coach around a mid major school. Then again, if they have boosters/donors paying for it...
