Behind 21 three-point field goals, VMI busted out of a three-game skid in record fashion and secured its first conference win of the year by overwhelming Charleston Southern, 116-83, Saturday afternoon before a crowd of 3,356 at Cameron Hall. Four school records, one Cameron Hall record, and five Big South records fell on the afternoon as VMI, the nation's leading scoring team, improved to 7-11 and 1-2 in the BSC. Junior forward Reggie Williams scored 37 points, including a school-record 30 points in the first half, and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Keydet attack. It was the eighth time the Prince George, Va. native had scored 30 or more points in a game this season. But it was the shooting of senior guard Fred Robinson that took center stage as the Alexandria, Va., native drained a school record nine 3-point shots and led the Keydets to a Big South Conference game record 21 treys in 56 attempts. Robinson, who missed last Wednesday’s High Point game nursing a sprained ankle, finished the game with a career-high 31 points, far surpassing his previous career-high of 24 points set against South Dakota State in the third game (Nov. 12) this season. Also reaching double-figures scoring for VMI was sophomore guard Chavis Holmes (24) and twin brother Travis Holmes (13). The 116 points scored by VMI was the most ever by a Big South team in a conference game. Charleston Southern, playing its first game without leading scorer Chris Moore (14.2 ppg) who is lost for the season after breaking his foot in practice last Wednesday, got a game-high 43 points from senior guard Dwayne Jackson, who hit a Big South conference game record 19 of 31 shots while grabbing 12 rebounds. Senior guard Donnell Covington added 16 points for the Bucs who dropped their ninth straight game and fell to 5-12, 0-3. The Keydets forced 31 CSU turnovers and converted them into 37 points while also logging 23 steals. The game opened with four ties in the first six minutes, but the Keydets opened up a nine-point lead as late as the 6:53 mark when Chavis Holmes hit a layup to put the home team up, 39-30. But the Bucs responded with a 10-2 charge to cut the deficit to one, 41-40, two minutes later on back-to-back Shelton Carter layups that capped the run. VMI countered with 10 straight points by Williams to take control of the half following on consecutive three-balls and four consecutive free throws by the nation’s third leading scorer. VMI led 56-46 at the break, and sprinted to a 16-4 run to open the second half to build the lead to 19 points on a Travis Holmes trey three minutes into the half. After hitting eight of 29 beyond the arc in the first half, VMI nailed 13 of 27 three-point shots in the second half to break the game open and outscore CSU, 60-37, in the second half. The lead grew to as many as 33 points three times over the last 6:40 of regulation. VMI continues the four-game homestand Monday night against Coastal Carolina beginning at 7:00 p.m..
