I'm taking donations of adult diapers to send over to our friends at Coastalfans.com. David Bennett has reportedly been offered the head coaching job at Presbyterian. Let the teal pants-wetting commence.

If you don't have items of your own that you can donate please send money to:

All kidding aside, there's reasonable thought to suggest Bennett might take the job. He's a PC alum, PC was his first GA job, he's very connected to the community and the rumor mill says PC would give him slightly more money and absolute control of the program. He's also at a career high point right now and this would a smart time to make a move.

I should probably add a disclaimer for any Coastal fans that lurk on this board -- I know you're out there 'cuz I can hear you breathin' -- that I am not hating on Coastal here. Coastal's done what we've wanted to do and done in a much shorter amount of time. That said, all in-conference jabs are officially classified as good-natured (unless you're that CSU whacko) and we sticks 'em in wherever we can find the space.

I don't see the sense in making that move except for the $$$. It's like he'd be starting all over. In the same exact situation. In the same exact conference. Only with more money in the bank.

Think of it this way, LUConn.

He's taken a program from a mud field to national attention. He owns 2 conference championships and was quite literally 1 second from a third. He's coached a Walter Payton candidate and been named Coach of the Year both within the conference and by national publications. He could retire right now and be a Conway legend for the rest of his life. And he's done all of that in just 5 years.
Yet, when his name ended up in the hat for the SFA job, he was not at all a serious contender for the position. That suggests, at least in part, that he's got to do more to get to the next level of head coaching and, really, what more can he do at Coastal that he hasn't already done? He's at something of a career high right now and opportunity is knocking on his door. The logical expectation is that '07 will be a down year for Coastal and, by extension, the opportunities are not as likely to be there. '08 and beyond, who knows? The future is wildly unpredictable, particularly in the coaching biz.
Also, you have to factor in that there are two big things that can nearly always pull an FCS coach out of the kind of good situation that Bennett has at Coastal: I-A and the alma mater. Coastal is still years away from making any kind of I-A move and how long is he supposed to wait? How often do you get the chance to coach your alma mater? Especially when they're throwing everything at you except the keys to the AD's house?
Also, he would not be starting over at all. PC has, historically, been a D2 power. They were one of the top 4 seeds in '05. He'd be starting with much more than he started with at Coastal and, if he can prove that he can get it done there too, then he's pretty much writing his own ticket to a a major lower-tier I-A conference like the MAC or Sun Belt. What happens after that? Who knows.

I admit I find this more than a little tantalizing. Especially considering that immediately after Spangler left for La Tech most of the PC fans were talking about promoting an assistant to head coach or hiring a high school guy. This would be a huge splash for ythem as they make the next step. Then again, I doubt this happens.

Bennett agrees to long-term contract with CCU

David Bennett has agreed in principle to a new contract extension, the Coastal Carolina football coach said Thursday.

Athletics Director Warren Koegel said the contract would span "at least five years," although he also said by the time the deal is finalized it could be for a longer period of time.

The new deal comes hours after reports speculated Presbyterian College was prepared to offer Bennett a deal to become that school's new head coach.

"We like it here," Bennett said. "We want to stay here. We want to stay here a long time. ... [After the contract extension], we don't have to talk about it anymore."

Said Koegel: "He is happy here and he and his assistants are pleased with where we're going," Koegel said. "He went down there to help [Presbyterian] as a consultant and they got a little excited about it."

The terms of Bennett's new CCU deal could be finalized as early as this evening.

Bennett, who graduated from Presbyterian in 1984, has a 34-11 record in four seasons at Coastal. He also led the team to the first-ever NCAA playoff appearance for the school and Big South Conference.

The success led Bennett's name to come up as a possible replacement at several schools, including Stephen F. Austin. Last month, when his name was associated with the Nacogdoches, Texas program, Bennett said his agent had applied for the position on his behalf.

Within days, he had withdrawn his name from that search. He also said at that time that he was more concerned with getting raises for his assistant coaches.

By the looks of Thursday's meeting between Bennett and Koegel, it appears both the coach and his assistants will be taken care of. Bennett made $132,500 plus incentives last season.

He said he is unsure what the yearly amount of the new deal will be.

Kind of relieved, actually. It would have made next season a little more interesting but I prefer to only see his team once in a season.
