Someone said that VMI runs the Grinnell style offense/defense. Anyone know if that is actually true? If your not familiar, let let me explain:

Wiki:

In February 2005, Grinnell became the first Division III school to broadcast a non-championship basketball game on national television when it faced off against the Beloit Buccaneers on ESPN 2. Grinnell College's basketball team attracted ESPN's due to the team's unique style of playing basketball, known simply as "The System." In a fashion much like an ice hockey match, Coach David Arsseneault's "system" incorporates a continual full-court press, a fast-paced offense, an emphasis on offensive rebounding, a barrage of three-point shots, and substitutions of five players at a time every 35 to 40 seconds. "The System" been criticized for not teaching the principles of defense. However, under "The System," Grinnell has won three conference championships over the past ten years and have regularly placed in the top half of the conference. Coach Arseneault's teams have also set numerous NCAA scoring records and several individuals on the Grinnell team have led the nation in scoring or assists.

The problem for VMI is that they don't really have any good shooters...Murrer is ok, but that's about it. Reggie Williams is more effective as a slasher, as are the Holmes twins. A high-paced tempo probably works well for them, but the three-point shooting doesn't really fit their strengths.

So what's the theory behind Grinnell's system? I understand what's being executed but I'm interested in the actual idea behind it. It seems to me that it's just "even a blind squirrel find a nut once in a while" with the shooting, hoping that the stats from even semi-skilled players work in their favor. Is there something more I'm not seeing?

That's pretty much it. Also, I remember reading somewhere that Grinnell's coach was looking for a way to get everyone on the roster involved and a way for it to be fun for his guys (since they all have green lights to shoot at anytime)...I'm guessing it is fun, but I don't see it working in Division I..

It has worked in DI but on a limited basis. i.e. Loyola Marymount, and Southern which as a 3 or 4 seed pulled a major upset in the NCAA's a few years back. More info here on teams that were successful at this style.

I think "the system" is a knock off of the Chris Mullen era Golden State Warriors' "run-n-gun" system....That was awesome....It could work in the Big South...

Mullen could fill it up from anywhere. Of course it didn't hurt having Timmy Hardaway in his prime as his point gaurd. It seems guys like Timmy have faded away and have been replaced with the "combo" gaurds.
