Free agency season in the NBA kicked of yesterday and with around 40% of the league becoming free agents it was a wild first day.
Brooklyn stole the headlines and the Knicks continue go screw everything up.

I’m sorta surprised KD left Golden State.
Kemba Walker to Boston was a good upgrade

Walker to Boston will be great for them. He is so good but never got much attention playing in Charlotte where MJ can't seem to figure out how to run a team from the front office.
I figure KD would go somewhere but really didn't even consider Brooklyn. That caught me off guard.
Now we wait on Kawhi Leonard

The local paper said that Durant signed for less money with the Nets ($164 million) than what Golden State was offering ($221 million). Why would he do that?

These guys make so much money off the court that the high level guys prioritize situation over money. KD was tired of playing with Golden State and wanted to play with Kyrie.
Philly getting Horford and Richardson makes them better.
Utah and Indiana are going to be sneaky good.
Golden State pulling off Russell from Brooklyn is a nice pivot too.
JJ to New Orleans to be their adult in the room makes them really interesting.

I don't think getting Horford/Richardson makes Philly better. Horford is getting old at this point and they overpaid for him.
What will help is ridding themselves of Butler who is extremely overrated and seems to bring drama where ever he goes. Losing a shooter like JJ will also hurt them but they will still be a very good team.
I agree on all other point Jon. As a Magic fan, I had hoped for a bit more but I am happy they were able to resign Vooch and TRoss to such good deals. Those 2 could've easily received more money elsewhere.

I agree about Indiana. They made the best free agent move in years by trading George for Sabonis and Olidipo (who should be back this year)

Horford is only over paid on the last two years of the contract, but they couldn't get him for the next two without overpaying for the final two. He's still one of the top centers in the league. Pair him with Embiid (who will always miss 15-20 games per season) and put him in that locker room the next two years and they have a legit shot at winning the East. If they get a title, it'll be worth over paying him those last two years.
As for JJ - losing his shooting will hurt, but Josh Richardson is a very similar player to him and is ten years younger. Here are their stats compared:
Richardson: 16.6 points, 35.7% from 3, 49.2% effective field goal percentage, 20.3 usage, 14.0 PER
Redick: 18.1 points, 39.7% from 3, 55.7% effective field goal percentage, 20.9 usage, 15.1 PER

Fair enough, I have never be too high on Horford. he is a good dude so having his presence in the locker room will be a good thing. Miami is a better coached team than Philly and it seems like they were able to get the most out of Richardson. It will be interesting to see how he adjusts in Philly.

durant is pretty soft and draymond basically told KD he just hopped a ride on the gravy train (he's right) So he packed up his ball and went home. Which is good for the NBA.

I've heard essentially two stories about KD and the Knicks. One is that they were uncomfortable offering him a max deal because of the Achilles injury, while I was driving back from physical therapy I heard on a show that they were willing to offer a max deal, but they wanted to see his medical report or something.
I do think the Knicks should have at least tried to get SOMEONE high profile (there were a few options there), but I can understand hedging their bets on giving him a 4 year max when studies show that there is no guarantee he is at or better than pre-injury playing level within two years after that injury. The Nets are essentially making a 3 year gamble on him with the first year of that deal going toward his recovery/rehab

The warriors were willing to give KD the max and they saw the medical report so I have no idea what the Knicks were thinking. My guess is they put the story out there to save face because KD turned then down because he wanted to play with Kyrie. So instead of it looking like KD turned them down, they floated the story that it was their choice. The Knicks are a joke. I find it comical that Brooklyn won out. Good stuff.

I’ll throw my hat into the Philly discussion since I now live up here, and I’ve decided to adopt them as my team.
Was disappointed to see JJ go, but Richardson is an upgrade. Horford is overpaid, on the back end like Jon said. The best part of getting him is Embiid doesn’t have to play against him. He as like Embiid’s kryptonite.
I think Philly got better. But being here for two months...their fans are STUPID! Heard a guy call Ben Simmons a power forward the other day. What?!
Everyone up here wants Ben Simmons to be great RIGHT NOW. Tough luck, he’s still a kid. Yeah, if he was 26-year-old Ben Simmons right now, Philly would be a lock to win the East. But he’s not, be patient. And by the way, if he was 26 now, you couldn’t afford him with everything else on the roster. Be happy with what you’ve got now.

Simmons has to learn how to shoot though. He can't be a non-threat.

yeah, its the knicks you have plenty of $ who cares if he isn't what he was. your fans wouldn't care for a year and believe you care and begin to care again. seemed like an absolute no brainer. but this is the guy that confronted a guy for yelling "sell the team" at a game and had him escorted out. hes one of the worst owners in nba history.
