It’s an interesting hire. I see the direction they are going. We will see if it pays off. I’m not convinced

I have a strong suspicion that their first choice may have turned them down to remain a big fish in a small pond.

ESPN and all the other national outlets aren't good enough, he had to wait for his "sources" to confirm. He is responsible like that...

With church, LU softball and a bicycle ride, I was out of the loop most of the day, thus did not see or hear of any news on VT, until I received the text. Too much going on rather than sit around waiting for VT to hire a coach.

I never thought he was a serious candidate Be wants to be at a basketball school. VT ain’t a basketball school. If Barnes turns down UCLA down I wonder if they’d look at GM

I agree, and I mentioned the same earlier in the thread. Perhaps VT knew that and never seriously considered him. It's also possible they pursued him and he declined. I think GM has passed his peak at WSU. He will be hard pressed to duplicate what he did a few years ago with the final 4 run and the undefeated regular season. If he wants to contend on the national stage again, he probably needs to re-examine his priorities. Mike Young may work out great for the Hokies. Time will tell. Considering his age and local connections, he is probably someone they can retain, even if he has a lot of success there.

Tech's AD was quoted as saying that his new HC hire is not a "job jumper."

Subtlety does not appear to be one of his strong points.

There are too many "job jumpers" out there.

Yeah, what's wrong with these people, wanting to make more money, live where they want to, and have a chance to win more games?

Tom Wolfe was wrong when he said, "You can't go home again."

Both Buzz and Young made it happen for their families. Young's parents even still live in the area.

job jumping is sometimes called greed.

Ballcoach, for both Buzz and Young, I don't think it was about the money. :nono

Based on your posts, you have a job. If you were to take a job in Alabama that offered substantially more money and better working conditions, would you consider yourself "greedy"?

While you may be correct, Young went from making $175k to $2M overnight. This changed his and his entire family's lives.

In the case of Buzz, he was well compensated at VT, and although the A&M job pays somewhat more, I'm sure it had a lot more to do with the fact that He is a Texas native who went to college and played basketball there as well as spending several years there as an assistant coach (including 2 years at A&M). Add to that the fact that the facilities at A&M are among the best around, and I have zero problem with his decision.

For Young, who is 55, this presented an opportunity to test his coaching abilities at the highest level before his career ended and do it just up the road from where he was born and raised. I don't know what he made at Wofford, but I feel pretty safe in saying he is now in a position to upgrade his lifestyle and make his family's financial future more secure.

Edit: Based on the info Manson provided, Young would have been a fool not to take the job. If increasing your income more than tenfold is greed, just call me greedy.
