kinda. durant went to a nucleus that just got done going 73-9.

Lebron built a team.

Durant joined a team.

I’d say those two things make the situations totally different.

But didn’t win the Championship

No Pat Riley built the Heat

What about leaving for a team to form the first Super Team saying you are going to win 7 championships, lose to a team with only one legit star then turn around and go back to the team he left in the first place?
kind of the same on the surface. but also very different. the first created super team was Boston btw. the way miami happened was bad but he was still young and had bad advisors/espn all up in his business. Dan gilbert is one of the worst owners in the NBA who continually put crap around lebron. so i had no issue with him leaving. I think jordan might of if he hadn't signed that long term deal in 89ish and they didn't get pippen. but he was also building a brand around that color scheme and team too.
Houston tried it in the late 90’s when they added Pippen to their roster that included Barkley and Olajuwon. The Lakers tried it in the early 2000’s when they added Karl Malone and Gary Payton to a roster that had Kobe and Shaq. Neither of those worked, but they pre-date the Garnett-Allen-Pierce Celtics.

i felt payton/malone was a last gasp. both still good, but nowhere near prime. i think both went from 8 digit contracts to low 7 to play for the lakers. but yes. there have been built "super teams" before.

The difference in the Houston/LA super teams and the new breed of them is that the old ones were stars on the back end of their career ring chasing and taking the minimum. The current group style is stars taking pay cuts in their prime.

Lebron isn't a huge fan of Houston. Who can blame him though???

Dude has spent most of his life in the Mistake on the Lake. Take his tastes into account with that massive grain of salt.

It was going to require a serious amount of introspection on my part to get over the idea of having that guy on our team. I was thrilled we didn't get saddled with buddy Melo last year.

Instead you have Harden who shows zero interest in playing defense and CP3 who get stay healthy.

But yeah, you all are too good for LeBron....

I don’t understand why Houston keeps coming up as an option. I think it’s a long-shot at best. They would have to completely GUT their roster to find the room, and also talk CP3 into taking less. That scenario just doesn’t seem feasible.

Did you even watch the NBA this past season? Harden played outstanding defense this year and particularly in the Warriors series. Lebron is a great player but he is not worth the headaches.

Did you even watch the Warriors series? His defense was ripped on TV and easy to miss if you weren’t looking really hard

His defense was slightly improved but outstanding??? He played awful defense in the western finals so I'm really confused as to which series you were actually watching.

His defense other than a few minutes in the blowout games was above average. Yes, he had a rep for not playing d for years. But this season he caught the vision and turned into a very good defender. Until CP3 went down and he had to carry the offensive load primarily by himself, his defense was a big reason they won three games.

You said his defense was outstanding and now you are saying above average.

I watched enough Houston games to see he at least gives effort but that doesn't mean he is an outstanding defender. He just isn't awful.

So you think you saw more of the Rockets this season than me. I'll just factor that into your analysis.

No, but you're incredibly biased in your analysis.

The Rockets are a very, very good offensive team. A Mike D'Antoni will never be known for their defensive prowess.

Again, you must not have been paying close attention this season. Those old presumptions used to be accurate a year or so ago.

So the Houston Rockets are known for their defensive prowess now or have just improved? Those 2 are totally different.

On a scale of 0-10 his defense used to be 1. It’s now a 3. So yeah. It’s gotten what? 200% better?

Good point, PH. When one is awful for so long and they are finally not a complete liability then of course its going to appear outstanding. I get it now.

The additions of CP3 & Mbah a Moute in addition to the development of Capela significantly improved the Rockets defensive rating from 16th in 2016-2017 to 6th overall in 2017-2018. But if the numbers don't fit your storyline you can always go with tired generalizations from the path. That's always a good take.
