Western Kentucky and the OVC

We were talking about this today at the tailgate. WKU is leaving the OVC. Is there any chance in the world we could possibly, by some act of God, work our way into that conference? No one really said anything about it today. It was all said in passing but just thought I'd throw it out on here.

Its a bad idea. The travel costs would kill us in return for the auto bid. The league is ranked below the Big South in football right now.

Sly is right. The OVC is not nearly what it used to be, when in its heyday Eastern KY was a I-AA title contender under Coach Kidd, or MTSU when they had some good years (before going I-A). Now, in basketball, that's another story. Travel would be brutal, even worse than BSC had when they moved into the big south.

And WKU isn't in the OVC, is it? I thought they were in the SunBelt in all sports except football..and aren't they in the Gateway in football?

They were saying Ohio Valley earlier. I could be wrong. I have no clue what's going on or who's in the conference, I just thought I'd bring discussion from the tailgate over here.

If they are in the Gateway for football...what about moving into that conference?

You want to talk about a travel nightmare. Most of those schools are MVC-type locations and farther north and west.

There is no reason to pursue the Gateway conference. It is one of the premier 1AA conferences but too much travel. We need to look into the Southern or Atlantic 10 as our only options but stay in the BSC until it happens. If the BSC stays small then bulk up the out-of -conference schedule. The BSC gives us plenty of oportunity to do that as a result of having just 5 members.

WKU is in the sun belt for all sports except football, and now the I-A jump makes them a full sun belt member.travel would bit a bit tougher in the OVC, but if we add the new york schools our travel costs will go up quite a bit.
