APPOMATTOX — Even in the darkest night, there’s a bright day ahead.
Doug Smith knows a thing or two about that adage. Whenever the 52-year-old has faced adversity, he’s stared it down, said a prayer or two, and moved on.

He was my computer science teacher as a senior at Heritage. Still use some of that basic coding to this day. Somehow he actually remembered me from when I tried out for football as a freshman, but I quit after a few days because I hated practice. He is a good guy.

Best of luck to Doug & the Raiders. Glad to see he is doing well. I know when he left Heritage there was some people upset because he had invited players to FCA meeting.

Coach Smith is now in the running for a national honor as the most valuable coach. Here is a link where you can vote for him:

Beyond football he has meant a lot to the school and community in Appomattox. They went through some extremely difficult times in the past year, from students dying in car crashes, suicide, even a tornado. He has taught his players to be excellent young men, beyond football and is not ashamed to give God all the glory. Please take the time to vote for him every day until November 18th.
