7 foot Bahama native DeAndre Ayton is the consensus best in the class of 17 and believed by many to be the best prospect overall. he´s being compared to a young Kevin Garnett.

His coach and mentor, Zack Jones, is a former LU basketball assistant and the father of Dominique Jones, who was still hanging around NFL rosters last I heard after being a 4th string TE at Liberty. Dominique was also a basketball walkon for a couple of years.

He also promised a BSC tourney championship the year he was interum coach and then didn´t understand why he wasn´t retained when he didn´t win it. The premise, of course, is that Jones would come to work for his old boss as an assistant and Ayton would come along. I doubt he could even deliver Jones. If Zack wants to try to leverage this kid into a job, he can do a lot better than working as an assistant for a guy who hasn´t been able to sniff an interview for a real coaching job in 8 years. If we were going to base a coaching hire on the remote possibility of landing one recruit, we would have offered the job to Jones. That might actually have had a chance of working.

Why am I not shocked? I should be. That´s absurd. But I´m not.

He could have promised to deliver an NBA all-star team to the mountain and still wouldn't have gotten the job. There is a good reason he hasn't sniffed a real job in coaching since he was shown the door at LU.

Ayton has transferred to Hillcrest Prep in Phoenix, and Jones is no longer his coach. I guess it´s a good thing we didn´t hire RD.
