Yes he would. It has been talked about here many times. Not sure why we wouldn't seriously consider it. It could be that the cost of keeping the bird in good condition, training, etc would be very high. I am sure you wouldn't want a bald eagle dying on you either. LSU used to keep a tiger outside in front of the stadium. Not sure if they still do, but it was cool to go visit him when I was in the area.

I believe many of the schools who have real mascots also have vet schools and the resources to care for the animal on-site. We don't really have anything like that.

I remeber seeing this discussed in the past but couldn't find the thread. The Wildlife center in Waynesboro is not far from Williams Stadium and they are always in need of financial contributions. They bring there animals to many events around the Shenandoah valley. I'm almost certain they would bring an eagle down 5-6 times a year for our home games.

That would seem like the most reasonable thing to do if you wanted a live animal mascot only for football home games. Actually owning one might not be the most practical if it is even legal to do so, we're not talking about a pet type mascot like the Butler Bulldog, after all.

We voted in Chapel between Lions or Flames. Should have gone with Lions and have a lion at the game like LSU does with their tiger.

I'm glad they went with Flames, that's WAY better than the super generic Lions.

We voted in the Late '80s between Flames and Eagles. I'm glad we stayed the course. But I recognize that I am often in the minority on this topic.

I've always heard Indians are aloud to have them!?!? If that's the case I know tons of full blooded Monicans that participate in that pow wow up in Amherst every year!

There might be others, but I know Georgia Southern has a live eagle as a mascot. He's huge, but seems mild-mannered in crowds. Of course, he was tethered to the arm of the dude brave enough to carry him around.

We didn't either. I prefer Flames to Lions and Eagles, but why couldn't someone have looked to the Bible and brought up the possibility of being the Leviathans?

As cool as that sounds, that might be a little long for a mascot name.

Apparently Crusader was taken. Or Billy Graham had copyrights on the Crusade part ......

It seemed like half of the Christian colleges/schools in the country had the name Crusaders back when we were considering our options. Frankly, today that term is often used in derision by most of society. If that had been the case in the Early '70s, we would probably have chosen that name out of spite.

Like Sly said Crusader was taken, Valpo and Holy Cross immediately come to mind along with countless Christian high schools all over the country, including mine. Flames is shorter and more unique.

1- I disagree in its commonality being a former Crusader myself. Knights etc yes. Crusaders. No
2 - I guess no one got the deeper 'double entendre' on that one....

Bada bing, alabama24!

CJ's first alma mater for which Doc took much of his inspiration in the early days of our school has Crusaders as their nickname as well.
