It doesn't matter where you start or the Tide would have won the past couple of titles. It is where you finish.

For the most part you are right. For some teams, however, it does make a big difference. TCU and Baylor will be advantaged by starting so high IF they win out.

Preseason polls are most often an indication of where a team left off and where pollsters think they will end up based upon past success. I think the Tide will get a "favorable" ranking, which will prove to be optimistic. Of course, I reserve the right to change my mind once we figure out 1) who our QB will be and 2) how well he will fit into the scheme.

Regardless of rankings in pre-season I hope Alabama and Virginia Tech meet for national championship, and LU goes deep in FCS playoffs. On my radar screen, no other team really matters.
