UNC Asheville to pay selected athletes next season

ASHEVILLE – For colleges that rank at the bottom of their conferences in athletic budgets and struggle every year to break even financially, an extra $90,000 or so annually is a big expense.

But that's what UNC Asheville and probably Western Carolina are looking at spending to pay athletes and help keep up with their competitors.

Here's the meat of the story ...

The Big South Conference has decided that all 11 of its schools, including Asheville, will pay cost of attendance for all scholarship players on the men's and women's basketball teams.

Eaton and Appalachian State assistant AD Mike Flynn said their schools are undecided on how they will proceed.

According to UNC Asheville athletic director Janet Cone, the school's cost of attendance figure per athlete is $2,454 for in-state students and $3,564 for out-of-state, and paying the 27 basketball players expected to be on scholarship next season in those two sports will cost the school about $90,000 per year.

Looks to me like a school would have to do all sports or none. It should help schools that do all, in recruiting.

Cost of attendance is going to help some schools no matter how many sports are funded. Like Louisville, for example, will be paying kids $5000+ while UCLA is around $2500. If a recruit is deciding between those two, you don't think UL being able to legally give over twice as much isn't going to work heavily in their benefit?

I'll admit the Louisville figure looks high when compared to some others, but they don't just pull those numbers out of the air. There are actual costs involved, and they are higher for some schools than others. You don't think the NCAA will be monitoring this?

Pitino and Petrino. Sounds like a Sicilian law firm. Fact is, although they have engaged in some questionable personal behavior, they both have been highly successful as college coaches and I don't think either has had significant problems with the NCAA. "Master of the Obvious", while it certainly applies, doesn't do justice to ballcoach. We need to come up with something else to cover statements like he made here about Louisville. He's the Judge Judy of FF. Makes up his mind about someone or something based on limited knowledge, and from then on won't be confused with the facts.

Very true Sly... In my opinion at the Major schools, few will have an extra advantage over the other based on this. The reason is because the "ancillary benefits" under the table will still go on and the schools that do those things will simply "offer more".

There is more "under the table" stuff happening than most realize. When I was in the Army, a former PAC 10 basketball player was in my Platoon. He told me stories about his palm "getting greased" with 100 dollar bills. With the decisions some recruits make, it makes one wonder what all is taking place.

Yeah. Do I want to live in Los Angeles or Louisville? Even if you don't consider the weather, the cool factor for LA is like x10.

I would take the Top 5 'warm weather' schools over the Top 5 'cold weather' schools. Except WVU. They transcend every type of weather!

Well you'd lose in basketball more often than you would win then.

Are we a cash cow? Yeah I suppose... especially when compared to the rest of Higher Ed at the moment. However, NO athletics department in all of FCS truly "breaks even," including LU.

If you are struggling so much just to stay afloat in DI athletics maybe the school should rethink remaining DI. Too many schools are DI that have no business playing at that level anyways. Maybe this will help that problem.
