I guess there will be yet another opening in the Commonwealth. Hopefully this pans out for the Horns.

I can't wait to see what they say about a guy named Shaka after the comments made when Strong was hired.

I am glad he's gone. Maybe now the Richmond Times Dispatch will not have his photo in paper every day.

I have no idea what you are referencing. Do you expect the ridiculously messiah-like treatment to be over the top this time as well?

Besides Alabama, Texas has some of the racist fans that I've ever seen.

ODU fans are salivating at the possibility of the imminent drop of VCU back into relative obscurity right now.

Not sure they've ever really been in "relative obscurity." They haven't had a coach finish their tenure at VCU with a winning percentage worse than .550 in over 20 years. I'm sure they will find someone and rebound.

They weren't known nationally until 2007 when they upset Duke and followed that up with a 2011 run to the Final Four. Prior to that, the most love they got was from their alumni and the general Richmond area.

That much I would agree with. But this is still by and a large a better program than ODU.

And ODU fans HATE them for it. Some ODU fans may even vehemently disagree (not saying I personally disagree, but this is a mid-major version of Duke-Carolina).

Per Jeff Goodman, VCU's AD is NOT hiring a search firm and is starting interviews today.

Wonder why he made particular mention of their not using a search firm? Not to mention, what kind of patience will Longhorn Nation have for Coach Smart?

Because he thinks that an AD should not have to use a search firm. From twitter: "Part of an athletic director's job is to be prepared to hire coaches. Should have a network, so no reason to hire a search firm."

I mean it is perfectly fine if you don't want to use a search firm but when people start talking as if they have all the answers I begin to question them. A true leader is not afraid of admitting their weaknesses or reaching out for help when needed.

I can't say I disagree with this sentiment

Texas doesn't care about basketball. How do you think Barnes managed to last 17 mostly mediocre years?

VCU will probably reach out to Anthony Grant again. This is the season of returns, Lebron, Ritchie, Larry Shyatt at Wyoming, Chris Mullin at St. Johns, Dave Leito at DePaul...

I had a fan tweet me about mentioning Havoc and Shaka Smart during an ODU telecast. I was going to be a smarty pants and tell him I was doing a National Telecast and that VCU plays on a National scale but I'm not that guy. I just acknowledged that I heard him because I know the venim that is spewed between the two schools. It was a really fun hoops rivalry for a long time in the old CAA.

Shaka will be missed around here in Richmond but I really hope he does well down in Austin. I will be pulling for them to do well.

Barnes was far from an abject failure in Austin. 16 Dances in 17 seasons speaks for itself. It is a very short list of schools with similar results.

Shaka will be left with the cupboard fairly full and will be sitting in a recruiting hotbed. It is tough to find an NBA roster without Texas HS kids on it.

VCU just hired Will Wade. If Donovan doesn't leave Florida for the pros, Grant may not have very attractive options left this year. With his buyout from Bama, he might just wait a year to see if another prime job opens up.
