That clown show deserved it. All other leagues that employ him need to do the same. It's been needed for years.

I was at the Liberty football game where they announced Hess' entry into the Liberty Athletics Hall of Fame. Being a UVA fan and being so used to doing it, I booed him. I am so happy that they finally gave him the boot, he has probably taken several years off of my life with the terrible calls against UVA over the years.

Easily the worst ref on the planet. I'm glad he's gone, maybe the other leagues will get their crap together and fire him too.

Ever officiate? The guy was good. He has at least 1 Final Four under his belt. There are a lot worse officials out there
Edit. I posted before reading. He has several Final Fours under his belt

He wasn't the worst by far. Every coach, team, fan thinks every referee is the worst ever.

Hess was/is embarrassingly bad. I have no place for the ref that takes over the game or takes things personally, and Hess is one of the worst at that. Don't know him personally, but he's terrible at his job.

You are confusing Competancy with Personality. Jordan was the biggest Azzhat around but he was pretty good at his job.
Judging by the number of Conference Championship Games, Final Fours and a National Title game he's pretty good at his job of being a referee

He's one of the best refs in the country but he has no filter. He's brash and doesn't have much tact. Eventually that can catch up to you. It's unfortunate he lost his job for it.

If I was a ref I would have a hard time not reacting to some of the crap people yell at refs. I don't know why people feel as if they can say whatever the hell they want to refs.
I have spent many games angry at refs but some of the personal shots people hurl at refs is so ridiculous. It is a miracle that more refs don't get in trouble for saying things. This is multiplied by the entitled, wealthy fans in attendance at court side who feel they can get away with saying whatever they want.

Possibly top 5 player to ever play for Liberty to this day.

I don't see how it's "possibly." I know we were at a lower level back then, but he's all-time leading scorer and 2nd in assists.

I think it's a definite, but didn't want to start a different debate.

No one (except SJ and postie here) ever talk about what fans say. Maybe Karl shouldn't respond, but he's well within his right to have unruly fans forcibly removed from the site of competition. Some peoe are just PO'ed he actually does it.
Bad at his job?! The fact that it's his second job notwithstanding (he's a doctor of psychology), his credentials speak for themselves. How many here have actually officiated basketball, or any sport for that matter, at just the HS Varsity level? Harder than you think, I GUARANTEE it!
Fans are stupidly biased. And we're all just okay with that.

He worked the 2007 national title game and has also officiated in five other Final Fours -- in 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2013.
Yeah, you guys are right: he's awful.

Maybe the Big South can pick him up.
He reminds me of Crawford in the NBA and Joe West or Angel Hernandez in MLB. Ego extraordinaire.
