An argument could be made that coastal is the best athletic program in the big south. Their men's basketball team went over and beat auburn last night. What needs to happen for us to be successful in both sports?

It's not an argument. It's the truth. It's why we started Beat Coastal.

I had this thought the other day, I would like to see us hire this guy. I may be a little biased towards him as a former Gary Williams assistant and head coach at my Grandfather and Uncle's alma matter. But if Gary Williams had the guy on his staff for 13 years he has to be pretty good.

Yea but one that needs to be opened. I haven't given up on our team or our coach but what's it going to take? It's a whole new team this year, maybe they haven't gelled yet. Who knows, we could get stronger as season moves on, but at this point, coastal is ahead of us.

I said this I think in the baseball section, but I don't have a problem with beating Coastal. What we don't need to do is be LIKE Coastal. It is not, nor should it ever be our mission to be Coastal 2.0. Our job is to be Liberty. Our job is to show not just "if it's Christian, it ought to be better" or "can be better", but "if it's Christian, it IS better." How do we go about doing that? If I knew that answer, I would be offering myself as a consultant to JB within the hour. Baseball has taken a huge step in that direction. Football did that this year and now needs to build on it. Women's basketball has been that way for a long while (although there has been some regression). Men's basketball needs to find an identity within that idea that I posted above and then find a coach who can fit within that idea while still winning 18-20 games a year minimum, and getting the kind of wins that Coastal has gotten, and High Point and even Gardner-Webb and former conference mate VMI.

Whatever it takes, its going to also take some patience from Flames Nation, because building that culture is going to take time

Beating Auburn in basketball is like beating Kentucky in football. Not that impressed.

I've heard that same dumb cliche about a hundred times in reference to our basketball team. Here's the truth: there are about ten schools in the country who wouldn't have fired Layer already. He saved his job two years ago by going on a small winning streak.

Coastal wouldn't have put up with that. For whatever reason, we will.

I'd take wins over both those schools and both those sports. We should be impressed if we win those games. Big South, in theory, shouldn't beat anyone in SEC in anything. I would love to beat Auburn in basketball. Truth is, we can't even beat North Florida or Miami of Ohio, let alone an SEC team. Shoot, we may lose to St. Francis of Brooklyn..

BTW, coastal destroying Richmond 36-8 right now in the 2nd round playoff matchup. Making our win look even more impressive!

My point is Coastal should not be our benchmark. Dr Falwell's vision wasn't to be like Coastal. Our benchmark is schools like Notre Dame and BYU. I dont want people to think that while I don't think we need to be like them, that somehow I don't want to beat them.

With all the talk of their success in regionals in baseball and playoffs in football AND starting a discussion after they beat an SEC team in basketball, while the words "we want to be like Coastal" have not been explicitly stated, they are implied

Fine...I still think we have to do it our way. Coastal has found something that works for them and its bearing fruit.

Jimmy Patsos is a friend of mine from way back when we both were the low man on our respective staffs. He is kind of loony at times but he can coach for sure. He was the guy that put 4 guys on Steph Curry and lost to Davidson big even though Steph only had single digits a few seasons ago when he was the head at Loyola MD. Not sure he is a good fit for Liberty.

I wouldn't exactly say beating Auburn is some sort of crowning achievement. They got blown out by Colorado and Tulsa and are 3-4. Right now they are easily the worst team in the SEC.

Beating a power conference team on their floor when they paid you 50 G's to come play is a GOOD WIN period. It doesn't matter if that team is struggling or not. Everyone has gone to Wake Forest and won in the past few years. Beating Clemson has become a Big South right of passage the past 3 seasons. It MEANS a lot to your program as a Big South institution. I'm not looking for a signature win from Liberty. I'm looking to not lose to really poor bottom feeders. I know it is hard to win games at this level. I coached at this level. I played at this level. But at some point we have to expect more from our team to at least compete. I am tired of fielding calls, emails, tweets, Private messages from former players/coaches asking me what is wrong with the basketball program.
