Not bad for a guy who used to coach in the Big South.
Marshall received 44 votes Thursday from the same 65-member national media panel that selects the weekly Top 25. Tony Bennett of Virginia had 13 votes, Billy Donovan of Florida drew six and John Beilein of Michigan and Larry Brown of SMU one each.

Let's face it, when he was at Winthrop we hated his guts and called him Purple Face, but there was never any doubt the guy is one heckuva coach.

QFT...the man put Winthrop on the map in the years he was there and no conference team since (not even BSK's beloved High Point) has come close.

yeah, he can coach. That is for sure. It must be tough being a Winthrop fan seeing his success. At the very least it has to be bittersweet.

I think the folks at Winthrop knew for quite a while that Marshall's departure was inevitable and feel like they were fortunate to have him as long as they did. There was no way they could match what a place like Wichita State had to offer either financially or in terms of the opportunity to build a nationally ranked program like he has. He probably stuck around Rock Hill at least a year or 2 longer than he should have.

Why would you even mention High Point? They have NEVER won a BSC championship in MBB. Not sure where BSK comes in here either. I'm not aware of him having any affiliation with HP, but I may have missed the memo on that one.

I wouldn't say it is tough seeing his success at Wichita State, or even that bittersweet. We got 9 years with an elite coach...that's a long time. Would I have liked more? Of course, but given WU's resources, it's amazing we got that many, and he took the programs to new heights and stayed long enough to finally get the program its first NCAA win as well.

I'm more disappointed that the WU fanbase vanished as soon as Marshall did. Heck, everyone seemed excited when Peele was let go and Kelsey was hired, but the attendance is still only half of what it was when Marshall left. Winning can cure some of that, but it just disappointed me that people bailed on the program so quickly.

I think the big south tournament thread is where that whole mess with bsk and high point started
