Always loved this about him:
"Phillips was a Texas original in his blue jeans, boots and trademark white Stetson -- expect at the Astrodome or any other dome stadium because he was taught it was disrespectful to wear a hat indoors."

They don't have coaches or characters like Bum in the corporate NFL any more. Few men in Houston of any profession are held in higher regard than Bum. Sadly many of our younger folks no him more as a sausage pitch man and less as the incredibly entertaining coach from the Luv Ya Blue days. He was gone before I moved down here to cover sports. But growing up in Cincinnati we loved the divisional contests with the Oilers if no other reason than Bum would fill the news coverage with awesome quotes. I interviewed him a few times over the years and he was a gentleman's gentleman despite the aw shucks Cowboy persona. Many suggest the reason the Oilers ultimately had to move to Tennessee was because the city of Houston never forgave Bud Adams for firing Bum.

The closest you have is Rex Ryan.

Don't you dare put Buddy's boy as a comparison to Bum. Buddy & Bum were archnemesis.

Son of Bum is closer. But right now he is busy trying to help salvage the Texans' season.
