Holtmann Leaves G-W for Butler

The timing stinks, but the move upward to bigger things was inevitable. He is a great coach and even a better person. I hate we are losing him, but know he will be a success up at BU.

Now Burch and company need to move quickly. I am all for allowing one of our top two assistants, Netti or McAuley, take the reins.....

Not only is the timing awful, Holtmann has really been doing a nice job from this outsider's perspective. Whenever there is a DI head coaching vacancy, there will be no shortage of applicants even if it were midseason.

Riddle me this. Which is better: leaving a BSC school to be an assistant at Butler or leaving a BSC school to be an assistant at an ACC school :dontgetit

There is risk for Holtmann involved. If Butler goes to the Big East and goes downhill, he goes down with them. He'll be the only person on their bench with any HC experience. However, if Butler continues their winning ways, he will be sitting in high cotton in 3-5 years for a big time HC gig somewhere. Add in BU is paying him around $200K, it was a no brainer move on his part. He is a class act I wish him well. I just hope Burch doesn't screw the pooch hiring a replacement, therefore my support of either of the current two top assistants on the GW bench.

And no, even though Burch has a fetish for hiring coaches with LU ties (see our womens lacrosse coach hire as the most recent example), I want no part of RD.

I can assure you, neither does Chuck, I wouldn't worry about that at all.

Coincidentally Meyer had a brief stint at Butler too. Holtmann and Meyer are actually pretty good friends. This will Make 4 new HC's in the Conference now right?

UNCA
Longwood
Campbell
Gardner Webb

Did I miss anyone?

A third of the conference, yikes. And to think, turn back the clock to February 1, you would have had LU at the top of that list, and UNCA and GW would be nowhere near it.

Holtmann is good friends with Brad Stevens as well, and was in the running for an assistant job at BU two years ago after his first year here.

Why not have a true LU reunion tour? Meyer as HC and RD as his top assistant. 8)

Well, we hired Tim Craft, former assistant here, went to Auburn and coached under Jeff Lebo and moved with him to East Carolina after Auburn canned Lebo. The big thing is the entire coaching staff stays in place for at least one season, hopefully meaning little if any, player defections.....

It is just good to make a quick decision. At least he knows the lay of the land. Congrats!

Well, now we not only lose our HC, but his top two assistants, McAuley and Netti, who were both passed over for the head job when Holtmann left, are now gone. McAuley to Furman and Netti to ECU, oddly enough to take Craft's spot on that staff. All of the hard work of the past three years that Holtmann put in is now in jeopardy. :(

Well, Mr. Burch knows a former BSC head coach real well. Maybe he will make a call. :)

Chris and I went to college together. I was really glad to see him doing well as a coach. And yes, he was a good person at Taylor University. I hope the best for him.
