Just saw on Twitter that Liberty is a top contender for former UVA and Alabama QB Phillip Sims. Very interesting...

Eh...not sure I want him either. As nice as it would be to have an extra QB available, but I dont think he would be a good fit for LU on or off the field.

He needs to arrive with eyes wide open regarding the Liberty Way and understand that we have a starting QB and he will have to earn any playing time he gets. If he can do that, I say welcome aboard to the second rated QB prospect of the HS class of 2010.

I personally don't do crack. And no I don't know him off the field, do you? Baggage sometimes outweighs talent and so far the talent hasn't lived up to the hype. Like I said, if he grows up, sure I'd take him. For UVa to drop him like that in their situation, I think there's a lot that hasn't been said.

No no no and no. Byd that is ludicrous to say that. He was not good at all last year and wouldnt have been the starter for uva this year had it not been for grades. I dont care what the rankings said.

Im with olldflame and jinxy if we do take him. He isnt just going to walk right in and be handed the starting job just because he went to a BCS school, so he is going to have to prove that he is head and shoulders above Woodrum from the day he gets here, and then on top of that, he better makes sure he hits the books too considering why he is gone from UVa

Sims wasn't good last year? In his first year getting starts at the FBS level he completed 56% of his passes and had a 9 TD to 4 INT ratio. He also added 2 rushing TDs to the mix. That's not great, but it's not bad either.

From the sound of things he couldn't hack it academically at UVA. That's fine as they're an elite academic institution and actually hold their athletes to the same standards as the rest of their student body. If he's willing to come to LU, abide by the rules, put the work in on the field and classroom, and doesn't have any true off field issues then we should take him in a heartbeat.

BYD I think it's a fair point to ask about off the field issues about anyone coming to LU. Granted we don't HAVE to and have proven in the past we are willing to sweep things under the rug. Since I hope we are passed that, I feel its a legit question. I hope he is a super kid who is a lay pastor at his church and rescues puppies, because from a talent stand point it is a no brainer.

Agree with NAJ here. If he can fit our style on the field and off, I say why not.

Would be concerned about having him and Woodrum battle at QB though.

Why? Woodrum would be the best back up in FCS!

Read flames nation cj.

And I have faith in the coaching staff and judging by the coaching style and recruiting recently gill is going to a more athletic qbs which sims is.

I for one would welcome him and think he would be a good fit for gills offensive style.

From a "potential" standpoint, I'd want him on the team. As long as he's committed to working in the classroom as well as abiding by the LU way then I'm all for it.

What's that supposed to mean? If the kid buys in to the Liberty Way why say no?

If the only proven problem with him is academics... LU is a no-brainer for him.

As far as his talent goes, he was mediocre but at the FBS level. Switching to the FCS would dramatically improve his play. I'm in.

And it would be a pretty good LU/Richmond game if he came..... just sayin.

Whose Twitter?

I don't see any mention of LU on Sims' Twitter: https://twitter.com/phil14_sims757_

Hearing that Liberty is a top contender for former #UVa QB Phillip Sims. ODU is not in the running.

Phillips covers UVA for the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Just because he went to Alabama and UVa doesnt necessarily mean he is going to be an instant upgrade on Woodrum. Like has been said, if he ends up here, he is going to have to prove himself in practice against him and show that he is (in my words) head and shoulders better than he is.

The Washington Post ran an article about the situation saying that he went into spring practice 3rd on the depth chart because of his academic issues. He finished spring practice in a 3 way tie with Watford and Lambert. I don't think the ability is an issue, it's the academics. I do wonder if that's carrying over into his ability to quickly learn an offense/read a defense.
