I know that this is only FBS, but what are your thoughts/opinions of these rankings? If Liberty was on here making 126 FBS college football head coaches for 2013 where do you think Turner Gill would be ranked?

They give a guy who didn't even coach last year the #8 spot. I guess actual coaching doesn't factor into the equation.

I don't know how you can rank coaches who have never been a head coach before, like Kliff Kingsbury, Mark Stoops, and Mark Helfrich.

On another note, since 1980, has there ever been a guy that rose through the coaching ranks as fast as Kingsbury? He graduated in 2002, retired from playing in 2007, and didn't even start coaching until the 2008 season. There are high quality coaches that serve as assistant for 15-20 years or more before they get a shot at being a head coach.

How does that factor into his ability to coach? Everywhere he's gone, he's won, and last year doesn't disprove that at all.

I just found the list and thought it would be interesting for discussion especially where Turner Gill would be on the list if Liberty was on there making 126 teams for 2013. Guess I was wrong.

To give an honest answer to your original question, he'd have to be near the bottom of the list considering his resume, one winning season and a Bowl appearance at Buffalo notwithstanding.

Well played. Beamer's best "coaching" attribute was recruiting 757 kids and I have a feeling ODU is going to be taking a sizeable chunk of that potential away from him.

I agree Frank is overrated but let's not forget where the Hokies' program was before he came. He did bring them to national prominence and provided the fans with a team to (usually) be proud of year-in and year-out.
