Simply put, you get points for each correct pick (10 points I believe) and if you pick an upset and its correct, you get the mathematical difference between the seeds as bonus points. For instance, if you picked Harvard over New Mexico (13 seed over a 4), you would get 9 bonus points added to your total.

It's a somewhat popular alternative to the standard bracket scoring system. I kind of like it because it's the only pool I'm in that uses it and it's a nice change of pace. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that we were using this format before making my picks. If I had known, I would have gone with a few more underdogs.

I definitely would have filled out my bracket differently if I had known that was the scoring system.

it's his fault for not doing things with a regular scoring system. Why give extra points for picking upsets? If you picked the upset, your reward is the points other people didn't get for picking it, plus potential points in the next round other people don't get.

Again, read the rules before you sign up. Most of the pools I'm in give bonus points for picking the upset. But none for BEING upset

Last year we had the same scoring system. And I think I said three different times last year I use a different scoring system that I liked and nobody complained.

Congrats to the winner, which I believe is LUConn, but I have to say that I gave up on my chances at doing well after my bracket got blown up before the end of the first weekend, but I must say I am pleasantly surprised to have finished third when all was said and done.

Interesting that the one complaining the most about the scoring system ended up winning, at least according to BJ - it's blocked at work so I can't verify.
