East Tennessee State University student senators Tuesday overwhelmingly supported starting a new football program in a historic vote that followed a passionate debate on the topic.

Twenty-two Student Government Association senators cast yes votes and five voted no on a resolution that encourages ETSU President Brian Noland to develop a football program. There was one abstention.

The vote does not automatically guarantee a return of football to ETSU, but it significantly clears the path for Noland to request the Tennessee Board of Regents, the governing body of ETSU, to approve a program.

They likely are headed back to SoCon if they are welcome or they could slide into Big South or OVC.

Close minded academic types who view it as a huge expenditure (which of course it is) and don“t see it as benefiting them enough to justify said expense.

I wouldn't dismiss the concept out of hand. If App & GSU get Sun Belt invitations, I suspect that some bitterness will quickly be forgotten by the SoCon pack of privates.

But I do suspect they will be invited to the Big South soon as a football affiliate at the minimum.

I only say no socon for them because it seems that the socon would want to replace all those public schools with private institutions and continue their quest to become the ivy league of the south. Mercer and presby fit that mold along with VMI. If they are smart they ditch the higher than thou academic mantra and add coastal, Mercer, Kennesaw and ETSU and keep a very tight footprint. But that is just MHO

I was over on AGS and most of the SoCon posters (from a few schools) seem to think that its a foregone conclusion that they will be in the SoCon for football when it starts up again (2015 is what I think someone said on there), although it will be sans Mini-Dome

Yeah, they've got to get out of that tin can of a dome. It's horrid for football.

You think it is bad for football, you ought to take in a basketball game there. Yikes.

There was a time when LU was looking at that as a possible option, but that was a LONG time ago! :oldhag

I dont know how I would have felt about an indoor football stadium. It certainly would have been loud but there is something about the atmosphere of an outdoor facility...and when constructed properly, an outdoor stadium can be a very loud place to play (just ask anyone that plays at Oregon)

The Swamp in Gainesville is so darned loud since the first 50 rows are below ground level, the sound has nowhere to go.

As for domes, football is meant to be played outdoors, preferably on grass where possible. Period.

Grass is the most overrated aspect for any field sport.

In Houston, we prefer the best of both worlds at Reliant. But it comes with a ridiculous price tag.

How has this thread lasted this long without Scar referencing a certain dunk?
