BOILING SPRINGS - Gardner-Webb announced Friday that head coach Ron Dickerson, Jr., has resigned to pursue other opportunities.

"I thank Gardner-Webb University for this job and opportunity," said Dickerson. "I reminded my players of the words of Isaiah 41:10, 'Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.'"

Dickerson, 41, completed his second season in charge of the Runnin' Bulldogs with a 7-15 overall record and a 4-8 mark in Big South Conference play.

"I appreciate the time and effort Ron put into our football program, and wish him the best as he moves forward with his career," said Vice President for Athletics Chuck Burch. "We look forward to bringing on board a coach who is committed to developing a program that will allow our football team to be successful on the field, in the classroom and the community."

Dickerson was the eighth head coach in Gardner-Webb's 43-season history of senior college football.

"We wish Ron the best," said Gardner-Webb president Dr. Frank Bonner. "As we begin a new chapter with our football program, we intend to promote continued improvement athletically in the Big South Conference, while remaining committed to academic achievement. Our current student-athletes, alumni and members of the university family and community should experience a great sense of pride in this program."

Gardner-Webb opens the 2013 season on Saturday, August 31, against Furman in Ernest W. Spangler Stadium.

He's a G-W alum and has head coaching experience. That makes him a nice catch under their less than desirable conditions on short notice. He'll have a challenge cleaning up the mess left by Dickerson.

McCray was the OC here at Mercer before he got the gig at NGU. only met him once. as i was hired after he left. seemed like a good guy.

Its gonna be real interesting to see if he can get much of a recruiting class in in about a week and a half...sounds like he will want to take advantage of the whole signing period to be able to cobble something together
