Billy Gillispie to lose his job

Billy Gillispie, the coach for Texas Tech men's basketball, is about to lose his job after the players revolted complaining about abuse and over practice amongst other indiscretions listed below:
— Since Billy has been at Texas Tech, 15 players have left prematurely.
— During his 18 months in Lubbock, over 30 members of the program, including staffers, have departed.
— One player was required to practice with stress fractures in both legs.
— Players often had to go for more than 20 hours a week (the NCAA limit) and at times had practices of over four hours in a row. One practice lasted over 8 hours.
— “The team’s star player, Jordan Tolbert, cut his hand on the rim one day last year in practice and suffered a four-inch gash across his fingers. The next day, according to one source, Gillispie had the trainer bandage his hand and then instructed Tolbert to dunk the ball every time he caught it.”
— Before every game, Billy Clyde would require everyone involved with the team, including tv and radio announcers, to do a layup drill and if they missed, they had to run the steps of the arena. Tom Leach and Mike Pratt thankfully did not have to deal with that.

But Kentucky fans are crazy over wins, not losses, players transferring (unless they suck), over-practicing players into the ground, and abusing players (that's what IU fans like since they supported Bobby Knight for so long)!

I can't explain it, but society gives an unusually large amount of leeway to two professions: doctors and coaches. For some reason, those two sectors are placed on a pedestal above so many by so many. And with that comes the freedom to behave irrationally and even psychoticly without repercussion. The abuses in collegiate athletics are evidence of this. It's discouraging and disappointing. And such freedom can cause some to really go off the edge mentally. But college athletics is a business, and the monetary return/reward for wins is often chosen to be worth the risk of this kind of reprehensible behavior behind-the-scenes. Often, administrations look the other way until forced to deal when public embarrassment risks taking a hit in the pocket.
It won't change anytime soon. Like I said: incredibly discouraging.

That's funny and so typical. Was he ever convicted? No, other the PR ha. Assaulting students is a joke and made by an Adminstration looking to dump him. And of course UK Nation has never done anything illegal

you are just insecure and defensive like most UKfans and try to draw moral equivellancy to make yourselves feel better.
JK- doctors are neither put on a pedestal nor given a lot of slack. That may have been true 20-30 years ago but not anymore

All of lynchburgwildcats' threads should be combined into one "bad things that happen at programs not named UK" megathread.

I'll be honest, I don't get the Jethro Tull reference. On a side note, Ian Anderson is playing at a theater here in a couple weeks.

Haize - fair enough. Is it possible that an examination of why that's no longer the case for doctors will reveal what it will also take for coaches to be dethroned?

You mean cut their pay, increase their paperwork and use the Internet to diagnose their game plans? Or have athletese leave the office and do what they want and blame the coach when the players way doesn't work?

I don't need to be defensive of Kentucky, Kentucky has eight National Championships and is on top of the college basketball world.

How can you still say doctors are put on a pedestal? They get slapped with frivolous lawsuits left and right.

If being defensive of Kentucky fans once in this thread is being defensive of Kentucky, then gladly render me guilty of your accusation.

Relevant as in being relevant in the NCAA tournament, as opposed to Liberty men's hoops which isn't relevant in anything other than the Big South.

Nope, and I haven't forgotten how our men's track team has produced more NCAA Champions than your entire athletic department.
