COuld Duke lose its 2010 National Championship?

Lance Thomas dropped 30K in CASH as a down payment for jewelry during his senior year at Duke at a New York firm that caters to professional athletes. Even though that is a big red flag - because how the heck does a college senior from a poor part of the country get $30K cash - what is even bigger is how did an unemployed college student get a $67,800 loan to cover the rest of the $97,800 tab? WEll turns out Lance Thomas hasn't paid it back yet and is getting sued over it.

The NCAA strictly prohibits student-athletes receiving loans based on future professional earnings. So what kind of company would give someone a loan if they didn't think the person could pay to back based on future earnings?

So if there is a violation, does the NCAA use "strict liability" or use selective strict liability to protect a champion like they did with Rose (questionable SAT score but was never proven yet wins vacated) and Darrell Arthur (proven changed grades in HS that was proven yet nothing vacated)?

I'm digging it up? ESPN needs to put me on their payroll then so I can write an article claiming "sources" when I'm just stealing what someone on CBS or Sports Illustrated reported.

I really don't get this, he's making the league minimum in the NBA ($750-800ish) he should be able to pay his debts. As far as anything coming back on Duke, I really hope not, but as a fan am worried. Lance was not a star all 4 years and only broke out his senior year. He was never a lock to make it in the NBA (still isn't) so I don't see why anyone would loan him that type of money. He may be from a poor part of the country, but his mother does manage a Ford plant and could conceivably be able to cover a loan of this amount, so that COULD (a stretch I admit) explain it. I just really hope that boosters or agents weren't involved, makes me sick. Especially for a program that has always held high academic standards and always ran a clean program.

EDIT: Apparently, the lawsuit does claim that Lance alone was on the loan, so that may be a saving grace.

The deposit money could easily have come from student loan money. Just because you have a scholarship doesn't mean you can't get student loans. As for the rest, considering this company is having the same issue with other people, it seems they are just bad at business. Now if a FedEx envelope full of cash shows up....

The NCAA wouldn't touch this unless Duke or Thomas slapped them in the face with it. Not to mention, you're making kind of a reach with the info you've posted here (maybe there's more damning evidence you didn't mention). Why would anybody want $97k worth of jewelry? What a waste of money.

my point is that youre a Kentucky fan. everyone on this board knows it. You posted the story about UNC some weeks ago (dont know if its really gonna go anywhere after a nice bump for a week or so), and now youre posting this about Duke. The thread could just as well be titled "Do I want Duke to lose its 2010 National Championship?" As I said before, it doesnt make what the guy did right, but you seem to have quite an interest in stories that make the other storied basketball programs look bad in comparison to your boys in Lexington.

You didn't see me make a post about that psychopath Billy Gillispie or the potential recruiting violations with UCLA basketball. It's not about making other teams look bad, they (or their players) do it themselves. Difference is that UNC (which isn't settled, there are 3 other major issues involving academics still being investigated along with the UNC private investigation) and Duke issues involve potential violations with players on a team(s) that won a national chamionship. No one cares about the UCLA or Billy G stuff because it doesn't effect any programs of any relevancy these days.

And everyone has an agenda when they post, write, or say anything. Is being "fair and balanced" only a requirement for non-LU folk? If that's what it takes, blame yourself then for what is about to happen. Don't say I didn't warn you...
