Tidbits from the weekly conference call of Big South football coaches Tuesday:
Gardner-Webb coach Steve Patton didn't realize what kind of speed threat he had in freshman tailback Brandon Jackson.
With Kelvin German academically ineligible, Patton was prepared to go with a running-back-by-committee approach. But Jackson broke free for a 28-yard gain on his first play from scrimmage against Jacksonville Saturday and finished with 108 yards on seven carries to earn Big South freshman of the week honors.
Jackson played just one season of football at Pine Castal Christian High School near in Orlando and will probably play point guard for the Bulldogs' basketball team this winter.
"I'd venture to say that if he had been playing since the eighth or ninth grade, he'd be at Florida or Florida State right now," Patton said. "He's got a burst in the open field that we haven't had much of here. ? He can be a special player."
VMI coach Jim Reid on his team's 20-19 nail biting victory over Davidson:
"(Starting) 1-0 just means you can be 1-10 at the end of the season, and we've had enough of that around here at VMI," Reid said. "We need to stay really humble and really hard working to see if we can develop the program in the next four or five years."
The Keydets travel to Norfolk State Saturday.
