This is the same ref that gave Rick Pitino a technical earlier this season when Pitino was yelling at one of his players, named Kyle, and Hess thought he was yelling Karl. As someone who reffed games at the high school level for years, I think I can objectively say Hess is a joke and should be fired.

Yeah, rule 1 for refs is to watch the game and ignore the crowd unless something dangerous or egregious is happening. Tossing 2 former players who are commenting about the specifics of what you're getting wrong is simply going to make things worse at future arenas. Then there's the WVU-Syracuse game that a blind monkey could have gotten right.

Read through a simple Google search on him and you'll see an amazing coming together of fans who would never agree on the color of the sun as they line up to rail on just how awful Hess is. I don't care if he played at LU or not, he's the epitome of an ego-centric, look-at-me ref.

Google any ref. I'm pretty sure you're not going to find people going out of their way to create internet content praising how great a ref is. I've always thought he's been pretty pretty consistent which is all you can really ask for. Every fan has one ref that feels they have been wronged by at some time or another and then assume everything they do is wrong. Mine is John Cahill. That guy is the worst.

Mine is Blwall. He caused us to shoot 5 of 17 from the FT line the other nite! And then all the lay ups he caused us to miss!

I'm suprised I haven't heard us even referenced.
"Apparently, Karl Hess heard some words that weren't allowed at Liberty University, where he is still the all time leading scorer."

I think all refs miss A LOT, with some of the stuff they miss being inexcusable (like the screw up at the end of the wvu syracuse game). All you can realistically hope for is consistency, even being consistently bad is better than fluctuating over and over from good to bad in the same game. At least with consistency, the coach and players can attempt to adjust.

With that said, I appreciate the job refs do, basketball is a pretty darn tough sport to have to referee. What Karl Hess did with Googs and the other guy is just trying to make a spectacle out of yourself and that is inexcusable. Hess needs to man up, grow a pair, and stop acting like a *****.

Looks like Karl got slapped on the hand for his handling of the situation.
LYNCH - you should be suprised. What you think is 'missed' actually isn't missed. You should try it sometime!

Oh no, I've watched hundreds of hours of game film in my day. A lot is still missed. In fact, last game I watched on film I saw 15 illegal screen by one team in the first half and they were only whistled for one.

If what you say is true, would it be safe to say that it is impossible to not miss a lot? Would you suggest more refs on the floor or just omnipotent ones like you?

Are you watching from the POV of a coach or an official?

I'm watching from the POV of what the rulebook says when talking about illegal screens.

And the rulebook definition of an illegal screen has a decent bit of interpretation/wiggle room.

How much film is an official able to watch in-the-moment just prior to making a judgment call? How many replays does an official get to see between seeing a play live the first time, and the average of 1.2 secs before a decision has to be made on a judgment call? To compare your film study from a coaching perspective (obvious bias) to the judgment call of a basketball referee (withot bias) is to be truly ignorant of what the job entails.

To dwell on the fact that protocol was not followed is to ignore that the ACC hasn't officially addressed the policy with it's officials for some time. This situation also becomes more convoluted when one considers that a conference protocol wasn't followed, but officials such Hess work for multiple conferences, each with it's own policies.

Finally, every single person in this thread who has claimed "worst official" is displaying a clear fan or coach bias to the specific situation(s). It must be pointed out that all conferences are extremely careful to allow officials to comment at all publicly, so there will be no "owning up" in this case or any future one.

Moderators, you each know me well enough as a poster here to know I can take it and dish it out. However, this statement crosses from fan criticism to the crude language of personal attack(edited or not), and I'm embarrassed that you've permitted it with no moderator response.

LW, say what you will in opinion or critique of the events at hand, but please leave the crude personal attacks for your conversations elsewhere.

I think that I shall never see
A satisfactory referee.
One who calls them as they are
And not as I would have by far.
A gent who bends not either way
But lets the kids decide the play.
Poems are made by fools like me
But only God can referee.

OK, maybe it's not quite that hard, but it sure ain't easy.

Up until a few years ago, Karl was one of the most respected refs in the country. You don't get picked to lead the crew officiating the national championship game by being awful. Since then, he has found himself in the wrong place, at the wrong time, and unfortunately, making the wrong call, in several high-profile situations. I can accept that. Even the best miss some. I have a much harder time accepting what appears to be way too much attitude/arrogance/anger and not nearly enough humility and self-control. As far as his being a Liberty alum and a christian is concerned, I think his growing reputation as a "jerk" is far worse than any number of bad calls he may have made. I hope he can learn from this incident, and the consequences it appears he will receive from it, and make some changes that will help him rebuild his reputation.

My free throw defense is tops in the country, at any level. My lay up defense was way above average the other night. It really was spectacular to see.

Most refs blow whistle too much. How many times have we seen a "touch" foul called, yet a player will get knocked to floor and no whistle.

You were on top of your game! Totally made our FT shooters take that extra dribble and shoot out of their range!

JK I think you are over reacting!
