CSU Tabs Quinn as Defensive Coordinator

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern head football coach Jay Mills has named former Georgia Southern assistant Shawn Quinn as the Buccaneers’ defensive coordinator, as announced by Director of Athletics Hank Small on Tuesday.

“We are very excited about the addition of Coach Quinn to the CSU football family,” says Mills. “He brings a wealth of experiences and knowledge on defense as well as recruiting success to our program. His passion for the game, as well as for the student-athletes he leads, will be evident to everyone he meets.”

Quinn spent two seasons as the linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator for the Eagles, who are perennial Football Championship Subdivision contenders. Prior to his time in Statesboro, he was the co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at Northwestern State and a defensive line assistant for LSU during the 2008 season. Under Quinn’s tutelage, five LSU defensive lineman went to NFL training camps, with Tyson Jackson being selected in the third round of the 2009 NFL Draft.

From 2002-07 Quinn coached outside linebackers and defensive line at Louisiana-Lafayette, where six defensive lineman earned All-Sun Belt Conference honors. The Rajin’ Cajuns earned a share of the 2005 Sun Belt Conference championship with six players going on to join the NFL. Quinn also spent time as an offensive graduate assistant at Tennessee and was a member of the staff during the Vols’ 2001 SEC East Championship. From 1999-2002, Quinn coached in three bowl games under head coach Phil Furmer and was the position coach for Lou Groza Award finalist Alex Walls. Seventeen of Quinn’s signees have gone on to play in the NFL.

Prior to joining the Vols, Quinn spent five years as an assistant coach at Maryville (Tenn.) High School, where he coached the defensive line and helped lead the team to the 1998 Tennessee Class 4A state championship. He also spent a season as the outside linebackers and tight ends coach at Armuchee (Ga.) High School.

Quinn was a four-year starter on the defensive line for Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn., where he was an All-South Atlantic Conference honoree during the Eagles’ four-year conference championship run. He earned a degree in history and political science from Carson-Newman in 1995 and went on to earn a master’s degree from Lincoln Memorial University.

Mills also announced that assistant coach Gabe Giardina has resigned to take a position at Delta State University. A nation-wide search is underway for a special teams/wide receivers coach.
