man, that's crazy. I was 100% certain he was going to be fired at the end of last year. And then they won the tie breaker. Did something happen?

He was reassigned to save CCU money for his huge buyout (over $1m).

I have to admit that I didn't think the administration would make the move. But upon further reflection, perhaps they were looking to make themselves as attractive as possible for the SoCon or CAA should opportunities arise from realignment.
Frankly I'll miss him. He was easily the most entertaining coach ever at news conferences.

ESPN all over this on sportscenter this morning (mainly for another excuse to play the cats and dogs clip one more time). I don't recall Rocco's departure getting a mention. I guess, at least as far as media attention is concerned, there are advantages to being "eccentric"

I had to bump this...
the situation at CCU seems to be getting crazy- with "Occupy Coastal" protest, scathing letters from former players, and all kinds of accusations being levied at the AD and admin (where have we heard THAT before)
meanwhile, discussions on potential new HC are centered around local high school coaches.

Ask Presby how well that works out.
I just never imagined it would get that toxic - seemed like several down years for that program after being so dominant would have made this change less difficult to understand, guess not!
SJ... you hit the nail on the head BTW

Crazy to read the letters from Thigpen and Tolbert.

Wait..... you mean someone besides the Liberty Athletics Department thinks this is a rivalry?

Since Thigpen is no longer claiming CCU as his own, we need to strike while the iron is hot: JB should mail him a "Beat Coastal" T-shirt and an LU cap and request some pics taken.

To think, David Bennett was thought of as a god down here until the flames hired Danny Rocco.

Now there is a blast from the past. I believe his name was floating around when we hired Coach Rocco.
Will Amato be enough to pacify the Occupy Coastal folks?

Press conference is scheduled for tomorrow. Who will it be? According to the coastalfans.com message board, it is either:
Chuck Amato - former NC State coach
or
Joe Moglio (net worth of $150 million) - Former CEO of TD Ameritrade. Current Chairman of the TD Ameritrade board. 'Retired' from running the company to try and become a coach. Apparently currently coaches the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League.
You can't make this stuff up.

Coastal Carolina’s search for a new head football coach took all of ten days. According to sources, the school will introduce 61 year old Joe Moglia as the replacement for David Bennett at an 11:00 AM news conference at the football field house.
Moglia spent this past season as the head coach of the Omaha (NE) Nighthawks of the United Football League. Moglia also is a billionaire. He is the current chairman and former CEO of TD Ameritrade. According to Forbes.com, Moglia’s 2009 compensation was $9,936,460.00.
But Moglia also has a lot of football in his background. He was a coach for 16 years on both the high school and college level, including serving as defensive coordinator at Dartmourth, before entering the financial world.
In 2008, he decided he wanted to return to coaching and volunteered on the Nebraska staff under Bo Pelini. He then went to the UFL, first with the Virginia franchise and then Omaha.

Now there's NCAA violations waiting to happen.
"Hey coach, can I borrow the Bentley?"
"Ahh, just go ahead and keep it. I'll just get another one."

Moglia was chosen OVER Amato? I bet the realtors in Myrtle can't wait to sell him some oceanfront property for the coach's new home.
I found a great article on the old guy, when he was at Nebraska:
Nebraska's billion-dollar assistant
...Now he's in evangelist mode. "Here's the bottom line. I'm at a point in my life when I can do anything I want, and I'm picking this. I'm not going to pick something I'm not going to be outstanding at. I know this is something I can do."
Unfortunately for Moglia, the hiring decisions are being made by some of the most risk averse species on the planet. "Athletic directors are sometimes very fearful people because they're judged by the hires they make," says Osborne. "If you hire a guy who's very non traditional who hasn't coached for a number of years and things don't go well, fingers will be pointed at you. Joe needs to find someone who can go to the board of trustees and say, 'This is a non-traditional candidate but this is my guy!'"
Coach Joe knows this. As much as he'd like to coach a national powerhouse, that's not realistic. He holds out hope, though, that a potential employer, maybe at a non-BCS school or a Division 1-AA college, would take a chance on a man who oversaw thousands of employees in his previous leadership position. Maybe he gets the call; maybe it never comes. "But I had to try this," he says. "Had to."
