WWL.com Reporting
Not since 1974 has the Tulane Green Wave played a football game on its Uptown New Orleans campus. That is set to change in the near future.

The university's athletics department today is set to announce plans for a new 30,000 to 35,000-seat, on-campus stadium. There hasn't been a football stadium on campus since Tulane Stadium was torn down in 1980.

Good for them. I assume they'll still play their LSU games at the superdome, but they don't need the superdome's size during their other game.

They are distant second in New Orleans in popularity. Moving to an campus stadium worked out well for a similar academically-oriented urban university at SMU.

Offical word of Tulane's new field of dreams came in the same week as the announcement of a new head coach with big dreams of his own (Photo Courtesy of Tulane Athletics).

Shortly after his second news conference in 72 hours, Tulane athletic director Rick Dickson looked like someone who was headed home to take a Rip Van Winkle-esque nap.

Look at the two announcements that have come out of his department this week – one that was seven weeks in the making, the other that was several years – and the process to get to this week had not only taken its toll, but about 20 pounds off Dickson's frame.

On Monday, Dickson introduced Curtis Johnson as his new head football coach. Then, three days later, he was standing in the same spot, joining university president Scott Cowen in announcing a $70 fundraising plan for the football program that will include an on-campus stadium.

That is a quality setup for the stadium. I wonder if there is room for potential expansion if they actually get more popular.

Much like SMU, they have chosen to use a setup that works at that smaller scale and then utilize a nearby NFL stadium for special games that push interest beyond their capacity.

Incidentally, do you know where there capital is coming from to make this stadium a reality? Success with the Executive MBA & online programs. They've followed some of the successes that we have enjoyed in recent years with LU Online and applied it to their stellar academic reputation.
