HBU Adds Football & Joins Southland Conference

I mentioned this on Twitter but a Baptist school here in Houston that is transitioning back to NCAA Division I has announced they are starting up football in 2013 when they will join the Southland Conference (ORU just announced they are coming to Southland as well). I'm starting to do a little broadcasting for them on the side and I'm pretty jazzed at this development.
Robert Sloan is the president of HBU. He was the guy working to try and turn Baylor back around to its Baptist roots when the Dennehy/Bliss Murder Scandal got him run out of town. He's been raising significant money to build up HBU as a Baylor alternative for Texans. The stadium issue for the Huskies shouldn't be a big deal as there are tons of great options to lease. But there's no room on HBU campus that is landlocked not terribly far from where the sanders brothers call home and across the street from one of the TV stations where I used to work.

The holidays came early for Houston Baptist University and the Southland Conference as both crossed an item off their wish lists.
HBU joined a conference with nearby members and a home for all of its sports except men's soccer, and the Southland added its first-ever Houston member and an institution that will soon bring another football team to its conference.
The Southland officially extended an invitation, effective July 1, 2013, to HBU on Monday, an invitation the Huskies accepted.
HBU will begin a football program that will play in the Southland in 2014 and may compete as soon as 2013.
