Major Dilemma

For whatever reason, I decided to closely examine my family history. Terrible mistake. Not only did I find out a bunch of info I was fed is incorrect, it has officially wrecked one of my sports affiliations.
When I started following English soccer(shut up), I picked Portsmouth FC because I was told thats where my ancestors came from in 1600. That was all cool until today, when I came across a multitude of documents stating that he not only is not from Portsmouth....he is from a neighboring city 10 miles down the road called Southampton. No big deal, except that those two cities are major/major/major rivals. Think Duke/UNC. It's a perfect comparison because everyone in the area thinks it's a big deal, but no one outside the state/county cares. Anyway, my ancestor even pastored at a church in Southampton that is standing today, so I'll probably make a trip across the pond to see it.
But with this new info, do I have to start rooting for the team I used to hate? Or is it too late? Do I have to burn the jerseys I bought?

Choose Southampton. Its a cooler sounding name.
That and take a look at the two logos, and decide which one looks more cute.
I hope that helps!

Yep, southampton looks better. Its got a halo around the soccer ball, plus its got a cute looking tree, which means they are an environmentally responsible organzation.
Meanwhile, portsmouth looks like Muslims with the star and crescent.

I know ancestry why you chose to cheer for Portsmouth, but is that now the only reason why you cheer for them? If it is still the only reason, then switch, if not, then don't switch.

As someone who has more than a passing understanding of genealogy, I'd feel confident in stating that you probably have ancestors in nearly every EPL city. So I wouldn't sweat that aspect.
Southampton's gear reminds me of Chivas for what it is worth. I have a Chivas jersey I enjoy wearing from time to time because the Mexicanos around me all that club.

My dad did a ton of work with ancestry.com a while back, but it turns out this guy Steven Bachiler was a Reverend who led one of the initial voyages(there were a lot of them) to the U.S., had 4 wives and lived to be 100. So there's extensive history on him.

Hah. Nice.
I only know of my connection to the British Isles thru the etymology of my name. Which means all I know is to pick a random Welsh team.

You know ancestry . Com was started as a Mormon thing? So I guess I can put you down as another vote for Mitt Romney?
As for the delima, stick with who brought you. Your ancestry is not just where you are from but how you were raised. Port smith was there with you through thick and thin. Where was Southhampton when you needed them. Think of all the memories you and Portsmith made together. They were there for you at every major rite of passage in your life so far, and will continue to burn the passion in your heart. They have been good solid faithful and true to you for all of these years. How do YOU think you should repay that kind of loyalty ? Treat it like a prom date you leave at the prom to go home with someone else? Like the aging trophy wife? The stuffed Teddy bear being replaced by the sock money?
Stay true friend. Stay true!

TTL - Searching your ancestry really is not difficult these days. The internet took a hobby generally left to retirees & Mormons look for ancestors so they could have a proxy baptism and took it to the masses. Set up a free account on Ancestry.com and use their free resources and then use your friend Google to find details. You can literally get a ton of information related to the UK without much effort at all since everybody else has done the hard work. Other nations require more effort.
